I just received my yard of Cordura® - 1000 Denier, courtesy of
Deeney's tip posted in the "Sewing projects (was Tami's woes)" thread.
Wow, that was f'in fast!

I've got to say, the stuff is NOT a gripper-material substitute by any
stretch of the imagination. It is a course weave and appears to be
adequately rugged, but does not have the rubbery surface of a gripper
fabric. In retrospect, this is better for me since, frankly, I prefer
a seat with a little slip anyway. It is a rough texture, so it will
offer more friction than a typical vinyl cover. In any case, it
appears that it will make a fine seatcover.

I like the material - I'm not really a big fan of true gripper
material, I don't like having to stand up just to slide forward. I
kinda forgot about that part when I ordered the material, so I'm
actually better off the way it turned out.

Are you actually sewing a multi-panel cover? The cover I'm replacing
is a one-panel cover, so I'm not planning on cutting and sewing, I'm
just going to stretch a single piece.

Good luck getting Cordura to stretch, not necessarily my first choice
for upholstery fabric on something with compound curves...

You might get it to work if you make the top panel from it and sew on
a vinyl type (stretchy) fabric for the sides.

There really shouldn't be much actual stretching required to cover the
seat, at least that's my impression from appearances. I'll find out.
Worst case, I'll cut the piece down and make an S&M mask out of it.

My bad. It's exactly what I had on the front section of my
seat cover. I assumed that was gripper. You could put the
urethane side facing out, but that would be pretty much
guaranteed to start ugly molting in short order.

I got my first cover sewn. I'm trying to locate some high
density foam to rebuild a bottom layer on my seat before
I put the new cover on.

Yes, there are 4 pieces total. The main top piece is red vinyl. Two
side panels are the codura. A strip of black vinyl runs around the
front edge on the bottom (prevents puckering from trying to wrap
the codura). I unstiched one of my old seat covers to use as a
pattern. Rather than pins, I used a paper staple to attach the old
pieces to the new material for cutting.

You might have issues trying a one piece seat cover from the codura.
Unlike vinyl, tt isn't very stretchy.

I think I know what the gripper material is that you have mentioned.
I don't see why anyone would want it for the top of the seat cover.
The alleged "gripper" material on my seat cover is where the inside of
your legs rest against the seat when standing. Gripping on the sides
makes a lot more sense than gripping on the sit-zone.

I got a lead on seat foam from one of the upholstery shops in town.
I'll post pic's when I'm done.
