Okay guys after listening to all you katoom lovers I went to the local
dealer here and he has a 05' 300EXC in stock. So convince me why I
should sell my 04' CRF450R and make the change over. Also if you
silver tongued pumpkin riders are able to convince me, what do you
consider a good OTD price for the '05?

well, last year i was considering a 520, but a few rides through deep whoops
soon convinced me to get another 300( i did have a 94 300exc).BTW i'm only
65 kg.The four stroke was very nice on other terrain though. The 04( and 05)
300's were a significant weight reduction from previous models(7 lbs in the
motor alone IIRC).

I would try to convince you to buy that '05 300 EXC, but I got my '04
300 EXC for sale ready to race for $5500. Suspension valving and all
the gaurds. A good OTD price this early for an '05 is $6500.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks for the info Mike, but I have to ask any seat time on the CRF?
Somebody stated it was like comparing apples and oranges but I don't
agree. You can definitely make a crf a woods bike just like you could
make the 300 exc a motocross bike if you really want to.

I have ridden a CRF450R. The CRF is one hell of a bike, but in the
tight nasty stuff, it's just too much bike for me, especially when I'm
tired. The big difference is power delivery and ergos. The CRF has
more power, but off-road that can help or hurt depending on where you
ride. The KTM has plenty of power, for anything that I have thrown at
it. The KTM starts way easier and there are no valves to tighten up.
In stock form the CRF will out turn the KTM. I put 18mm off-set
triple clamps on my KTM and fixed that.

Like Mike Simmons said, just ride one, and you will know what you want
to do.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'd love to have a CRF450, but I'd never sell my 300 EXC to get one. The
EXC is geared for woods/trails riding, has lights, don't have to change oil
nearly as often, it's more nimble in the tighter stuff, stops quicker.

The CRF sounds sooo nice .. I rode one and loved the ride .. it's my next
bike. Guess it's time to let the KX5 go.

Thats about how I feel not ready to give my fofiddy up just to have a
300exc. Of course I could trade my quad and the wifeys bike and say
it's for her.....

if your dealer has a 300exc in stock, then i suggest you put a down
payment on it while you ponder the purchase, becuase they are very
hard to find.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Or, maybe one of the remaining new '04 GasGas EC300.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.gas-gas.net/product_enduro_ec_300cc_2004.htm" target="_blank">http://www.gas-gas.net/product_enduro_ec_300cc_2004.htm</a>

Two veteran KTM 300 EXC riders rode my '04 EC300 demo bike last
Thursday, on the hilly singletrack trails of the TrainRobbers Trail.
Both were impressed with the bike and said that they would consider
one for their next bike. They said that my bike turned better and had
smoother, but at least as strong, power than their KTMs.

The downside was that I had to ride their bikes while they rode
mine. <G>

And Tim makes 3...
Jim "let" me ride his '04 EC300 at the Spodefest in Idaho (the first hit is
free). Then, that evil bastard Eric let me ride his EC250 with it's Ohlins
forks.
I'd have had a better chance taking a big ol' hit off of a crack pipe.
For the record, I love my '95 300E/XC. It has served me extremely well, and
in all honesty, I took those test rides in Idaho expecting to like the
GasGas OK, but to come out of it with a preference for Baxter's '04 300E/XC.
While returning to camp on my EC300 test, I ran into Baxter and Eric on
their way out of camp, so I swapped bikes with Mike and turned around to do
some more testing. When we reached the turn around point and Mike asked
which bike I wanted to ride back to camp, I found myself back on the GasGas.
You can't possibly ride bikes any more back-to-back that I did those 2
bikes.

Make no mistake, the KTM is an awesome bike, and if the '05 is even better,
it must be killer. I found the GG to be better balanced, with wonderfully
neutral handling that seems to let you do whatever you want, and the motor
was near magic. The Ohlins fork IS magic, pure and simple. Amazingly supple
action, great control, simply fabulous. Oh yeah, the GG also has a 6 speed
tranny to the KTM's 5. When you add in the GG price reduction going on right
now, it became impossible to resist.
Last weekend I finally got to ride my spiffy new GG ECO300 (that's "O" like
in "Ohlins"). The motor is even more impressive here than it was at 5K - 10K
feet of altitude in Idaho (go figure). Very responsive, very strong, very
smooth. The bike worked so well out of the box that I can't wait to get it
fully dialed. More time on it coming this weekend.
You really should consider it.
