And Tim makes 3...
Jim "let" me ride his '04 EC300 at the Spodefest in Idaho (the first hit is
free). Then, that evil bastard Eric let me ride his EC250 with it's Ohlins
forks.
I'd have had a better chance taking a big ol' hit off of a crack pipe.
For the record, I love my '95 300E/XC. It has served me extremely well, and
in all honesty, I took those test rides in Idaho expecting to like the
GasGas OK, but to come out of it with a preference for Baxter's '04 300E/XC.
While returning to camp on my EC300 test, I ran into Baxter and Eric on
their way out of camp, so I swapped bikes with Mike and turned around to do
some more testing. When we reached the turn around point and Mike asked
which bike I wanted to ride back to camp, I found myself back on the GasGas.
You can't possibly ride bikes any more back-to-back that I did those 2
bikes.
Make no mistake, the KTM is an awesome bike, and if the '05 is even better,
it must be killer. I found the GG to be better balanced, with wonderfully
neutral handling that seems to let you do whatever you want, and the motor
was near magic. The Ohlins fork IS magic, pure and simple. Amazingly supple
action, great control, simply fabulous. Oh yeah, the GG also has a 6 speed
tranny to the KTM's 5. When you add in the GG price reduction going on right
now, it became impossible to resist.
Last weekend I finally got to ride my spiffy new GG ECO300 (that's "O" like
in "Ohlins"). The motor is even more impressive here than it was at 5K - 10K
feet of altitude in Idaho (go figure). Very responsive, very strong, very
smooth. The bike worked so well out of the box that I can't wait to get it
fully dialed. More time on it coming this weekend.
You really should consider it.
