Not sure *what* was going on, "Extreme-cc's"

Connect it directly to the battery terminals.

If your motorcycle is newer than sometime in the '60s, it's negative
ground . . . .

just connect it to the negative directly on the battery. There's
already a cable connected to the battery so it is probably just a
matter of putting the o-connection from the charger cable with it.
You are at the battery already , so why bother attaching it to the
frame ?

Just be sure that the place where you connect to ground is bare metal. You can
sandpaper the place where you bolt the lead to the frame, then paint over the
terminal to keep it from corroding...

Just follow the cable from the negative (minus sign) side of your battery. It
should be connected to the chassis only a foot or less away from the battery...
Positive ground is a British thing. I haven't seen a positive ground since I
owned a Triumph sportscar...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Connecting the quick connect harness for easy battery char.. |

thank you for the post Kay:
is there any reason your prefer grounding ( as battery tender recommends )
to just connecting it to the neg terminal of the battery like others
suggested?
I do have it connected right now to the battery neg - but I have to make
some adjustments
to the remote pager. so I can still change things. thanks again

yup. Just connect both ends to the appropriate (+to+ and - to -) battery
cable ends ant it won't matter how you bike is grounded. In my experience,
only 6-volt systems had a positive ground.

Thank you to all that replied.
right now I have it set up to the battery terminals
but can not understand why they would recommend
a harder set up for their product if its not needed.. thank you again

There's no electrical reason to use frame ground, although it is good
policy to only ever connect positive to the battery (for example when
boosting), and connect negative to frame ground last, some distance
away from the battery, so that if there's a spark its far enough away
to prevent your battery exploding! Shouldn't be a problem here,
unless for example the cabling going to the permanent connector had a
short. The only minor advantage to frame ground would be that it's
permanent - making for one less step involved when you want to remove
your battery.

i was thinking that maybe they suggest the ground to help
prevent shorts in such things like the alarm while charging the battery.

I suggested grounding the negative cable to the frame because I understood that
you wanted to attach some sort of accessory pigtail to the battery so you could
trickle charge it without removing the seat or any side covers...
I have one bike with such a pigtail going to its inaccessible battery...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Connecting the quick connect harness for easy battery char.. |

yes I did attach a pigtail to the battery - I do have to take the side cover
off
but that takes 2 seconds. however I did not ground it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Connecting the quick connect harness for easy battery char.. |

I'd be more worried about what charging the battery while it's still
connected to the system is doing to the charging system than how fast
I can plug it in.

Hear ye, here ye Gary L. Burnore <gburnore DeleteThis @databasix.com> doth
declare:

You worry too much, methinks. I've charged the batteries of all my
motorcycles over the years while they're still connected (there's
actually no reason to remove 'em if the water level's correct and
they're accepting a charge) and I've never had a charging system
failure on any motorcycle.
I really don't know how a charging system can be damaged by putting on
a charger . . . .
