I think I'll have a drink, feel free to put one on my tab while Shirley's
up.

I mentioned not too long ago that my sister was buying a 1973 (or was it 74)
CB550Four. She went through with it and dropped it off to me in order to
replace the carb gaskets, apparently it leaks gas at the carbs at about the
rate of 1 drip every half an hour, personally I'd leave it, but then again
my bike likes to mark it's territory. She ordered a replacement gasket set
for the bike, which should be in later this week, in the meantime I'm free
to play with it, I wonder if it's gonna rain tomorrow?

http://mel.eastlink.ca/bikes0638.JPG

Front fender is being repaired, someone backed into it the first day she
rode it to work, the makings of a bobber if I ever get my hands on it for
more than just some gasket replacements. <g>

Now there is a Mutt and Jeff pair. Or is it Laurel and Hardy?

All seriousness aside, one of our Triumph mastertechs loves those
bikes and has several. Rides em all over too. It's a favorite
"first" bike he recommends. Dunno if you remember the original
400-4. There was a version (440-4?) that was bright yellow that
I went so far as to check out at the dealers. It was too small
for me. Too bad. I thought that one looked sharp.

Thanks, it's so damn humid here a guy can't even stand to play in the
garage...........

Sorry to hear that!!

You know, even today they're not a BAD looking bike all things considered.
About 20 years ago I worked in a small town independent shop, changed fork seals
on one of these and then took it for a test ride.(gotta do that ya know<G>)
Came back convinced there was something wrong with the bike, it seemed to run
fine but it was a major DOG!!! Seemed a pity cuz the rest of it was decent.

Probably seemed like such a dog because the shop's "parts runner" bike was a
KZ900, more like 1100+, smooth-bores, cams etc, ran mid-6's in the 1/8<G>

Hey Tud, where did she get the gasket kit from? I've gotta do the same thing on
my 400 and I'm having a hell of a time finding parts.

CB400F Super Sport!? I've got two inthe garage. One red one (all
original) and one blue one that I used as a parts bike. Those bikes are
a hoot to throw around.

Let me answer that questions with this: I was 6 months old when my bike
rolled off the production line. <g>

The wife really likes the looks of those CBs, as well as the old Triumphs.
She's also found of the new Bonni's, not the cruiser ones but the one's that
look like they did back in the 70's.

Took my sister's for a spin around the block tonight, some things that took
some getting used to: Front brakes, that actually work; the feeling of
sitting over the front tire, as opposed to the Triumph, were I'm back pretty
far.

It could be a float bowl gasket. It could also be leaking past
one of the float valves. Since you are removing the bowls anyway,
take a good look at the valves.

Try the honda dealer, you'll pay three prices for 'em though.
Davis Silvers Spares most likely has 'em in OEM or pattern. (I just
checked, they are 7.50 pounds sterling each for CB400F)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.davidsilverspares.com/cgi-bin/dss2-cgi/Catalogue.pl" target="_blank">http://www.davidsilverspares.com/cgi-bin/dss2-cgi/Catalogue.pl</a>
Also, for all SOHC 4's go to...
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.sohc4.net" target="_blank">www.sohc4.net</a>
By the way, The bowl gaskets used in the kits are Buna-N and will go
tits up in a year or two since they've started adding all those aromatic
hydrocarbon additives to unleaded gas. They swell horribly and get
squishy (Tech Term) I'm experimenting with Viton gaskets at this time
and won't have any data for a year, unless they go sooner.
Be glad you don't have late 750k's with the pumper carbs!
(I've got many, many links to SOHC 4 stuff, Email me if you need 'em.

Saw a 400-4 not too long ago. From a distance,
I remembered how bad that I wanted one of these.
Then I got closer and closer. Looked like a friggen
moped. But a cool looking moped nonetheless.
IMHO the best looking pipes on a bike in a long time.

I don't mind my bike leaking oil or primary fluid, but gas eats holes
in shit, especially asphalt garage floors. I'm glad she's makin you fix it.

Hehe, it's been replaced with something more, shall be say, metal. Andi t
leaks more than she said, it's more like a drip a every minute.
