Colin Edwards has triumphed in horrible conditions at the IRTA Test in
Barcelona, and driven away in a brand new BMW Z4 M Roadster, following
an incident packed televised session.

With the rain falling and the grip reduced, it was Edwards that
man-handled the wet Catalan racetrack in style and beat out fellow
American Nick Hayden for the car, and for bragging rights in the paddock.

I was watching the "Live Timing" at work -- unfortunately the
Eurosport live commentary was of some ski-jumping -- and James was at the
top or thereabouts from the start of the session, dropped down a bit
when Vali et al. started getting to grips with the conditions, then came
back at the end. I was a bit surprised when Colin took more than a second
off Vali, then as much again the next lap; I assumed a dry line had emerged
and waited for others to also leapfrog below 2'00" but it didn't happen.

The other news is Rossi falling off while possibly trying too hard to
maintain team order. Rain is treacherous, he should have known better than
pushing too hard. That Checa also fell off has lost novelty value, he tends
to get way hotheaded in Spain (and elsewhere). Supposedly Roberts looked
good until he, too, fell off.

It's bad news for Honda that the only time Hayden's been close to a top
position is in the rain. It tends to indicate that nothing's wrong with
Hayden's riding, and something may be off with the bike.

Having watched it, it was a little more complex than that. Rossi,
Checa and Roberts had pretty much identical accidents at the same
corner - all braking for a slowish left-hander. There may have been a
slippery patch or something.

Don't forget that Colin beat Rossi for second place at Laguna Seca last
year!

Yeah but it is Edwards "home" track and the first time Rossi had been
there and Rossi still got 3rd so this year may be a different story.

And Rossi and the other GP Euros also managed to get Laguna to remove
the dip on the entrance to the corkscrew (where Edwards passed Rossi),
on the grounds of "safety". Note that none of the Americans or WSB
veterans complained about that dip, saying it's just part of the
character of the track, another thing you have to deal with to go fast
there and something that should be retained. But the GP boys prevailed,
so not only is the track more to their liking but also has a change
everyone will have to deal with for the first time, including Hayden and
Edwards. Not sure if they also flattened turn one any, another vertical
challenge the GP Euros complained about. Let 'em have their way and
eventually the place will look like Valencia...
