Okay, you wrench jockeys (or should that be wench jockeys?),

As previously mentioned, my '85 RM-250 clutch basket developed
serious notches and I plan to replace it with an NOS OEM unit. Now, is
it safe to assume that the NOS unit will come sans drive gear? And if
so, is it a relatively simple procedure to remove the exsisting drive
gear from my current basket and install it on the new one? I
understand that when buying billet baskets (like Hinson or Wiseco) the
process involves drilling out the "pins" on the OEM unit and
reassembling the new assembly with bolts, is this correct? Will I need
special bolts and/or nuts for this? Lock washers? Or do OEM
replacement units typically come as a complete assembly already?
Any info or advice greatly appreciated!

Fred,

Your OEM basket will almost always come with complete. Once you have removed
the center hub and plates the real trick is to hole the basket itself to
remove the hub bolt. Do not try to wedge the basket with a screwdriver to
keep it from spinning. Chances are that if you do it will break. Motion pro
make a tool that holds the basket quite well. You could also use an impact
wrench if the basket isn't too deep. After the old is out, inspect the trans
gears to see if there is any visible wear, install the new basket and plates
and torque to spec. Don't forget to soak your new plates with oil before you
return them to assay. Remember the best toll you can have is your box is a
service manual.

Hey Opie,

Thanks for the info! As luck would have it, I decided to "test" the
tightness of the original basket by putting the bike in gear and
applying LIGHT pressure to the crank nut that holds the basket on. The
thing was only finger tight! I honestly think I could have left the
bike in neutral and simply held the basket with my free hand!

I do know that putting it back on, and tightening it to spec, will
require a proper clutch holding tool. I plan to buy one. Also, I have
a manual now so no worries there. Mostly I was just concerned about
the replacement basket arriving sans drive gear and how I'd remove my
old one and switch it over. If that won't be necessary, then I should
be fine.

Just put the bike in fifth gear, insert a long socket extension
through the rear sprocket and across the swingarm and place a brick on
the rear brake pedal once you get some tension built up. Obviously,
this whole process is easier with a buddy to help out. Use your
imagination.

I've never trusted the clutch hub holding tools. I've seen how easy
those prongs can break. Of course, I've never broken any myself...of
course...

Although it doesn't sound like it, also note whether the bike has or
should have one of those washers behind the nut that you should bend
around the nut's edge to lock it into place.

The clutchholding tools don't hold the bolt bosses, they grab on to
the splines of the inner hub.

But your luck will run out using the wedge process. Just when you need the
bike for a ride. WHAM!!! your hosed. um....er..... well that is what
happened to a friend of mine.....The tool I am speaking of holds the splines
not the fingers of the basket. It is a great investment.
