I decided to try and force myself to like my XR again, so I took the carb
off tonight to play around inside. That's always good couples therapy for
us. I found what may be some dirt coming in. I posted some pix over on
abpm of that and the intake throat from the air box... I'm curious how
screwed any of you who have seen this effect before think I am. It was
running strong when I got back from WI with it. Thanks for any help on
this.

Mike,
I got good news and bad news. The bad news is you're screwed! Once any dirt
gets in the intake of an XR400, the max remaining life expectancy of the
motor is about 20 minutes. It is a common problem with all XR400's in all
model years. The good news is, I'll buy it from you, as is, for $100.

Something tells me that I should discount your offer to assist in this one
particular case, but thanks:)

This definitely needs taking care off to minimyze the risk of ruining your
engine.
Pics a are veeeery sharp and detailed!!!!!
How about glueing the carb to the intake rubber with YamaBond (tm)?

not knowing about XR400s, and taking the risk of writing bs, I'd like
to share an experience with carbs.
The XL250R (and other XL based brazilian bikes) airbox connects to the
carburetor using two rubber boots, one that goes out of the airbox,
looks like it's glued on the airbox and other which connects to the
carburetor, secured in place with a clamp. These two parts meet each
other halfway, and on the bike (my buddy's XL250R) I cleaned, I found
that the connection between the two parts was letting dirt (and water
and god knows what else) in. Solution was glueing the two parts
together using araldite (an epoxy glue), problem solved.
The carburetor of that XL had marks very similar of those on Mike's
carburetor... Hard to take of, but carb cleaner can take them off.
Checked the pics again, seems that XR400s does not have a two part
intake rubber. Perhaps dirt is getting through the air filter???

The place the carb is dirty matches the place where there is dirt on the
rubber.
Faulty clamp? Rubber designed for a 2 mm larger carbie? Leaking filter?
Never the less, Araldite/YamaBond/liquid gasket might help sealing the joint
between carbie and rubber, the filter needs checking every ride anyhow.
This araldite sounds like a pretty permanant solution, no?
Resistant to anything but direct nuclear hit and rats.

On the old XL, the intake rubber is made by two parts, one that clamps
on the carb and other that is glued on the airbox. In the middleway,
the met each other, no clamps, no glue, nothing, they just "fit" each
other. I don't know how it's supposed to work when new, but when old,
it gets leaky. Araldite glues it and it turns into a "normal" intake
rubber, just like the one on my XR. The araldite does not touch
neither the carb or the airbox...
that's not the case of the XR400, the pics Mike posted does show that
the airbox rubber is one entire piece...
in his case, silicone would seal and still be easy (???) to remove
carburetor...

Thanks guys... I'm taking it that this probably isn't a "guaranteed
screwed" situation (because given my level of enthusiasm for riding in my
quad-destroyed local setting, I'd just bulldoze the XR into the
let-my-estate-worry-about-it pile with the CZs). So adhesives and silicone
sound like they'll work. What about just regular wp grease?
