Archived from groups: aus>motorcycles (more info?)

I was at Westfield (Belconnen Mall) yesterday, and noticed a new motorcycle
park on the west side of the complex, outside Coles, where they eliminated
a few car spots to make room for 20 bikes at least. This approximately
coincides with the introduction of paid parking - for cars. Westfield now
has approx. 30 free bike parking spots right outside the two major
entrances. This is in addition to dozens of free bike parks all over town.

In the new bike park yesterday were two smallish bikes with L plates, and a
battered yellow Piaggio. That reminded me of a recent trip I made into town
one Friday night, parking at one of the afore-mentioned bike parks. There,
not counting my bike, of 10 bikes parked, 4 carried L plates. It seems like
there is a firm future for biking in Canberra.

For those who work at Tuggeranong - motorcyclists can park all day for
free in the motorcycle parking areas in Hyperdome's undercover park.

According to the Hyperdome's pay parking brochure motorcyclists have to
collect a parking voucher when they enter and present it to the pay
booth on exit but they will not be charged (although I can't see much
point in them having to present the voucher when they exit if they're
not going to be charged but that's what it says ...)

I was told by the booth operator that I did not have to get a ticket if I
could ride around the boom gate. It has even gotten to the point where they
don't even open the exit gate for me. They just wave me through.

I love this pay parking deal. It has meant that there are heaps of parking
for shoppers because the Centrelink public servants have decided to park
somewhere else. Anyone else notice how popular the unpopular dirt Southern
Cross carpark has become since the introduction of pay parking? It seems
that the Cowlishaw Street parking meters have been a waste of money because
nobody parks there until after hours.

I also like the idea of dedicated bike bays being allotted at the dome,
something that appears to be missing at Woden. Prior to pay parking being
introduced, parking bays were at a premium and often, thickhead car drivers
were starting to park in the underground bike bays that were clearly marked.
I have often been tempted to carry around a small pair of wire cutters in
order to snip these bastard's valve stems. Common sense prevails and I
usually come back to reality. It doesn't hurt to dream though.

Has anyone been booked at Woden for parking on the footpath area near Dick
Smith or do the bombers turn a blind eye? I do not recall ever seeing a
bike parking sign there and I only park there because it appears it is
accepted.

Cheers
Grant

Jesus, when did they start charging for parking in Tuggers?
I know i haven't lived near there for about 4 years, but i used to go near it once in a bit
when visiting the folks.

(Just suprised is all)

Yes, well, I was at the other entrance yesterday, and *poof* the
much-loved bike parking has turned into... an empty sheet of concrete.
One bike parked there at the time, out of habit or in protest. There
is still work in progress for the pay-parking arrangements, so I'll
wait a bit before getting annoyed.

In other words, no more parking at the north entrance; park on the
west, outside Coles.
