When I get my new Vstar 1100 Silverado next summer I want to visit with a
good friend of mine from Winnipeg. We are thinking that on a long weekend
he and his wife on their Harleys will leave from Winnipeg, Manitoba on
Friday morning and I'll leave from Cambridge, Ontario at about the same time
and we'll meet in the middle. We haven't seen each other since we got out
of the Navy in the early 70's although at times our paths have crossed
pretty close to each other. Does anybody have any idea of approximately
where we'd meet and how long it would take us to get to that point? Would
Sault Ste Marie be a close guess? Anyone else interested in participating
from either end or points in between?

(nb. I'm originally from Thunder Bay) Cambridge to T. Bay is 16-18 hours.
Winnipeg to T.Bay is about 7-8. This is assuming fairly solid driving
though so on a bike, probably a little longer. Now the Sault is about 7
hours from T.Bay so I'm inclined to think that it's probably not where
you'll meet (although it's not a completely unreasonable center point).

Once you're at the Sault, you need to decide between the northern and
southern route. They're about the same distance but the southern is more
twisty and scenic along the lake. We used to take the northern just because
there are fewer slow camper convoys and truckers. On a bike though, you
won't be too worried about getting stuck behind slow vehicles so I'd
probably recommend the south.

So if you want to be completely fair, you'll probably want to find someplace
about a third of the way from the Sault to T.Bay. On the northern there's
lots of choices like Hearst, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing or
Timmins. On the southern I think Wawa is a pretty clear choice.

According to mapquest.com, it's 1070km to Wawa from Winnipeg and 970 from
Cambridge....not bad for a rough guess...damn I'm good. Wink

cheeers,

Kris

Being a patriot, I obviovsly favovr the Canadian rovte and I can't believe
that Wawa is approximately half way. In 1976 I wiped ovt a brand new 1975
850cc Norton Commando abovt 5 miles west of Wawa. At the time the highway
was vnder constrvction going from two lanes to fovr. I was rvnning along on
beavtifvl pavement in the ovtside lane at abovt 70mph and when I popped over
a small hill the pavement ended withovt being marked and I went straight
onto fresh graded gravel. I was loaded vp with a Windjammer fairing, Craven
top case and hard bags and started to do fvll 90 degree fishtails and
eventvally I had to let it go down. I did everything right when I went down
and got myself on top of the bike to ride ovt the slide. Except for one
thing I'd have come ovt of it vnscathed. It was a British bike and the foot
pegs don't fold. Hell, they didn't even bend. The next thing I know the
damn thing flips and throws me in front of it and now I'm fvll of gravel and
I have this 600 + povnds of metal following me down the highway. Eventvally
we both slid off the side of the road and down a 10 foot embankment. I lay
there for a few moments to gather my thovghts and to be svre everything was
where it was svpposed to be on my body and then I got vp. It's amazing
where people come from as there was only one or two vehicles arovnd when I
went down. By the time I got vp to the highway again there mvst have been
abovt 10 cars and 6 bikes already stopped and everyone wanting to help. I
was impressed to say the least. There's obviovsly a lot more to the story
bvt that's enovgh to explain why Wawa is a significant destination for my
revnion with Thom and to meet his new wife. She's not the same one he had
the last time I saw him. A lot of water vnder the bridge in 30 years. My
wife isn't the same one I had back then either.
For svre it's Wawa if we can pvt this visit together. I'm contemplating
pvtting a side car on the bike so I can bring my wife with me. She can't
ride two vp becavse of the arthritis in her shovlders and neck bvt I think I
covld convince her to travel in the side car. More decisions to be
made..... Ain't life grand.

It's the damn Ontario maps. The northern side is half the scale of the
southern so if you're used to southern Ontario, you look at Northern and say
stupid things like, "Hmm.....Sault Ste. Marie to T.Bay doesn't look that
far...."

I know the route from TO to Thunder Bay and then to Winnipeg very well. One
of the best routes to travel in Ontario.

Saulte St. Marie is the half way point between TO and TBay. The half way
point between Winnipeg and T.O is Wawa.

I'd suggest you meet in Wawa however your friends from Wawa are going to get
the better part of the trip as the ride across the top of Superior is
fantastic. Great ride from the Sue to Wawa though. There is a great motel
just south of Wawa with hot tub, great resturant, great view and even a pool
table and fireplace in a common area. Absolutely love this area. Three day
week end, great idea. Need some company, let me know, always up for a great
ride.

Note re Vstar 1100, absolutely a fantastic bike!

My buddy in Winnipeg seems to think the US route would be the best but I'm
still convinced the Canadian route would be the best. I'm estimating riding
time to Wawa at about 11 hours of quite steady riding. Maybe 12 hours or so
for an old fella. Would it be about the same coming from Winnipeg to Wawa?
I tried to use "Mapquest" to give me an estimate, but being an American
company it keeps wanting to take US routes. So I let it go to see what it
would give me and it comes out to about the same or a bit more time and
distance wise. So there was nothing there to make me change my mind.
I was out to our local dealer in Cambridge and sat on the Vstar 1100
Silverado for about 20 minutes. It sure did fit nice. I'm about 5'10" 250
lbs so I think this is the perfect choice for a 58 year old with nothing
left to prove. They're going to give me a call when the new Special Edition
comes in.

The Canadian route is Superior - Pardon the pun... Heading north from
Cambridge to Sudbury, to Sault St. Marie, to Thunder Bay and finally to
Winnipeg is a total of 2100 km. The American way is 2150km. The trip
through Minnisota and Wisconsin is a trip through mostly open farm land.
The landscape does get monotonous. In contrast. Hwy 17 along the top of
Superior mostly follows the lake shore and there are many sweeping curves
and the landscape is almost mountainous. There are many scenic vistas
looking out across the lake.

My wife and I travelled to Thunder Bay this the past summer and the northern
route has become a favoured "biker" route. We saw hundreds of bikes and
actually rode with one or two groups from time to time. Met some great
people at the motels, resturants and rest stops along the way. We know this
area so well as we used to live in T-Bay several years back and used to make
trips to TO several times a year by car. The past summer's trip was the
first time travelling this route by motorcycle.

I use Microsoft Streets & Trips and have found its' distance calculations to
be very accurate. By adding additional stops you can recalc the route and
control exactly where you want to go.

I was doing this trip over three days say Sat, Sun, Mon I'd probably leave
town Friday night after work and try to get at least 3 to 4 hours in the
saddle. This would make the push the next day less of an effort.

The Vstar was one of the bikes I looked at the recent Toronto bike show.
There were several there but I think it was the classic that caught my eye.
Currently I am hung up on bimmers and likely will be for sometime as I just
bought the R11GS last September.
