I glanced at my Progressive Insurance renewal package this weekend when
I was doing the bills, ready to write them a check. The amount seemed
high, so I checked last years policy. I couldn't believe it: a 56%
increase in premiums. The policy was identical to last year's, same
credits, same coverage, good driving record. I'm going to call them in
the next day or so; maybe they "slipped up".
I suspect I'll probably have to start looking at quotes the other
insurance companies: CSAA, Geico, etc ..
Does anyone have any current recommendations! (my renewal is Feb 25th)
From a previous post on "Ca Insurance", I heard that Farmers is getting
out of insuring motorcycles for new customers this year.
Actually, from 2006 to 2007, Progressive "decreased" my premium 15%
which made me feel pretty good.
06-07: $367-=$311
07-08: $$311-$486 ....56% increase!!!
(Coverage --> full coverage for two Hondas: '01 ACE-750 & '02 VLX-600,
for 2 people)
Normally I'm pretty loyal (or it's the inertia thing). They probably
could have increased the premium ~10% or so and I most likely would have
just written the check and not even called.

When I was selecting the insurance provider for my new FZ-1 in 2005 I
had basically two choices Progressive and State Farm - all other were
insanely expensive. They had very comparable premiums of $350/year (area
of Chicago). I went with the Progressive only because State Farm
required to insure my cars with them too while I was very happy with my
current provider for my cars.
Me renewal comes in April - not sure how it will look like - thx for
heads up.

I saw the same issue - got my bill from Progressive and it went up
about 40% for the same coverage, with no accidents, tickets, or other
claims to them. I got a quote from Geico and it was about 40% lower
than last year's Progressive bill so I switched.

Shop around. Motorcycle insurance is a high-profit item in the
industry. That said, insurance companies derive funding from premiums
and from return on investment. A look at recent market conditions
should tell you what has happened to that second source of funding,
and why your premiums are going up. It may well be true for all
companies -- they don't invest in very different markets, after all...

I have Geico, don't know if it will be going up or not. Last year it was
$101.00 (liability only) for a year for 2 bikes (1893 CX650 Turbo and
1993 CB750 Nighthawk). I am old and have not had a ticket for 35+ years.
I have discount for MSF instructor, but I don't think that is a lot.

you do not know what is a hyper-inflation. I remember in Poland 1000%
once or something like that. But agree, printing money sucks.

Just one of many things. Why not carp about energy prices running up
150% over the past couple years or the medical fees, or college, or
milk, or you name it.

Yes, but this time I wasn't playing devil's advocate whilst immitating
a Republican.

Sure, they go up all the time if you're in the habit of collecting on
the policies. That wasn't the case for this fella. >> Stay informed about: Ca Insurance alert!? |

Energy prices are only now getting back to where they were in the
early 80's....so basically they haven't changed at all, peak to peak,
it has just been artificially cheap for many years and you lack
perspective. Stop harping on silliness.

My old 929 went from $350/year to $1500/year with no claims, tickets
or anything else involved. So....was it hyperinflation back in 2002
when it happened? I doubt it. Go be silly over at Reeky, the Hardley

Germany invented hyper-inflation in the 1920s. It was a bad idea; it
eventually led to all kinds of unpleasantness.

Those rates are pretty lucky
You will pay over $1000 per year for each in British columbia, Canada
And that is without theft or collision coverage !!

That's $1000 CDN, not USD. Equals $988.63 USD at the current exchange
rate.
