Ok, I am about to make the jump to 4 strokes, but,,,, I need some input from
others in the biking sport. I have a 95 YZ250 with a smaller front sprocket
and heavy flywheel. This does pretty good for me off road.
I rode my friends 2004 crf250r which has a dry weight of 206 and boy could
you tell it, it had plenty of power and I went faster then I had ever gone
on my YZ with no effort. Id love to get one of these but I am not sure how
they will do going up a 45 deg hill at 13,000 ft. My YZ barely chugs up some
of those Colorado mountains. I talked to a couple guys and they said the
crf250 loses less power at altitude than a 2 stroke and up there the 250 4
stroke actually felt like it did better because of the higher torque.
So, I could get a CRF450 and add about 17 pounds and gain heaps more power,
but... is it the type of power that Ill never be able to actually use and
then have a heavier bike to boot? I can get a used 450 for $4000 while a new
crf250 is $5200. I have heard the crf450 is not good off road unless its
geared way down. Also I heard the 450 needs a lot of maintenance including
frequent top ends....
crf250x, wide ratio , less power, same weight as the 450r , 222lbs ( doesn't
sound worth it) . crf450x, 455 pounds dry!!!! I think I'll rule that out
unless it comes with a center stand, reverse gear, and heater.
So here's the question, I'm 192 pounds without gear, I don't do motocross
tracks except for hare scrambles. I have 20 years of riding bikes under my
belt and am looking for a bike that will be more fun to ride and able to get
me anywhere my YZ could get me, yet one that handles like a new geometry
type motocross bike that is able to hook and corner with the best of them.
Top speed that I need is about 55 mph. and the ability to climb steep grades
over 12" rocks at 12,000 to 13,000 ft altitudes. Yet (always the yet) be
able to go to Rampart and play in the nice smooth corners handling the
occasional jump or whoop.
What cha think? you can e mail too at williamsonjeff.DeleteThis@hotmail.com if you want

crf450x, 455 pounds dry!!!! <<<<< Recheck that number I think it's heavy
by about 100 LBS
The group of bikes you are talking about are all great bikes. I ride a 450
in the woods and also ride a bit of MX with the same bike. Great machine in
bothe areas. The suspension soaks up the big hits offroad and still light as
a feather on the track. I have added an FMF PowerBomb header, Race Tech
Flywheel, Works connection Skid plate, Engine Guards, kick stand, MSR bark
busters, Notoil filter and a few other goodies. The only thing I change when
riding MW is Bars. I have my woods bars cut to 28.5 inches.

I know you are thinking 4 stroke ... but have you considered a KTM300?
The new (04 or 05) 300 EXC is about the same weight as your YZ-250, no
need to do much to it (hand gaurds, maybe a few other gaurds) ...
you'll have a wide ratio transmission, nice size tank, maintenance is
next to nothing, no filters or crazy transmission oil change head
aches, top end last forever (well, ok, a real long time), top end
rebuilds are easy and don't cost that much (compared to messing up a 4
stroke top end). 227lbs (tank empty) and can roost the Honda 450.
Just wondering if you have considered it.
Good luck,

Or a CRF450.

Or a CRF450.

My CRF tops out at about 80mph. That's about wide enough for me.

Like my CRF450. All I do is oil changes and clean the air filter. I
did adjsut my valve clearances once.
>no filters
I change the oil filter once every 10th oil change.

Oh, yeah, I *hate* that. Umm, what were we talking about? Crazy
transmission oil change headaches?

Mine is going on two years.

Messing up a two stroke top end is pretty pricey also.

Is that actual weight or claimed dry weight? My 450 actually weighs
230lbs ready to ride except for fuel.
>and can roost the Honda 450.
I'd imagine your 300 can roost any bike you're in front of, just like
my 450. But if you think your 300 can pull away from a CRF450, you're
riding with the wrong 450 riders. You need to ride with some that will
hold the throttle open.

My question is why did Honda make the CRFx sooooo much more of a pig
than the CRFr model. I love the 450, but ride mostly tight woods. I
just want a 450 with a low 1st gear, and green stickered. I have
E-start on my current bike, it's nice, but the 450 starts easy, I would
rather save the weight.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: CRF250 CRF450 CRF250x CRF450x |

Would you recommend that for all 4 strokes? I've been changing the
filter on the YZ250 every other oil change.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: CRF250 CRF450 CRF250x CRF450x |

What I wish that all the manufactures would do is produce 2 motocross bikes,
one with the close ratio transmission and the other (call its a desert moto
bike or something) with a wide ratio transmission,,, That's all I want. I
don't need the headlights, taillights, battery, electric starter, cruise
control, windshield, backrest, passenger footpegs,,, oops, sorry , going by
the weight I was thinking it was a street bike.
OK,,, I do thank you guys for your input, looks like I'll go with the
CRF450, a flywheel and lower gearing like MX Tuners setup..

That's the conclusion I came to as well. The Euro bikes sure look
trick, but parts cost is a major consideration, and Honda has
inexpensive parts. Notice I didn't say cheap. I've been real happy
with how my 99 CR250 has held up, both mechanically and cosmetically.
It's a compromise, but so is everything else in the world. Price you
pay for being poor:)

Not to get into too big a spat over this ... I just think the
magazines and industry have gone 4 stroke crazy ... I guess I should
just join in, toss away my ratio rite, and ride bikes that cost more,
weigh more, are more expensive and time consuming to maintain (with
exception to bikes like the XR line), and in some cases harder to
start.
According to Dirt Rider, the 04 KTM 300 EXC is 227 lbs with no gas in
the tank but all other fluids in place ... what's the CRF450? 230
lbs? If so, then I stand corrected. But if you compare the KTM 300
EXC to the Honda CRF450x, then a drastic difference.
Take a CRF450 off road without a suspension revalve? Ok. Stock tank?
Ok. Stock gearing? Ok. Most guys I know with CRF450s revalve, put
on a bigger tank, change gearing, add a flywheel weight (and then
other stuff like hand guards, etc).
As for the low maint on your CRF450, that's great! Not what I'm
hearing from other guys ... maybe they are just maint nuts.
Ok, the crazy oil change was a KTM 4 stroke thing ... quite a pain
compared to a 2 stroke ... but yes, out of place in this thread since
he was only talking Hondas.
Wait a minute ... you've got 2 years on your bike with 1 valve
adjustment?
It just sounded like for the type of riding the original poster was
intending to do the KTM 300 EXC would fit the bill quite nicely vs.
converting a 450cc moto x bike to offroad duties.
I will now go into the garage an take a sniff of my premix.
