I studded my XR 3 weeks ago after our second snow storm, in preparation for
my vacation during the Holiday season. The next day it got warm and rained.
It stayed warm. I threw out my back hoisting my bike onto the stand when I
studded it, and by the time my back was ready to ride, the snow and ice had
melted to the point that I couldn't use my studded tires - I couldn't see
trashing them on the first ride out. I prayed for cold and snow, just so I
wouldn't have to change my tires back to standard knobs - the only thing
worse than changing a tire is changing one with screws in it. I finally
gave up last weekend and spent two hours changing my tires back to rubber
(F**k), then went for a ride. 100 yards into the woods I slipped on a big
patch of ice and went down, snapping off my clutch lever. F**k. I went
home and changed levers, but (as it turns out) forgot to re-tighten my
barkbuster clamp bolts. I went back out and did about 20 tough miles that
day - I had a good ride - but lost one of my barkbuster clamp bolts. The
next day it got cold, everything froze then it snowed. Tomorrow it's going
to drop to -5F. I have to change my tires again. F**k.
