I wanted one, I needed one, so I sprung for a new 4-stroke toy. There's
nothing like firing up a new engine for the first time and smelling the
cosmoline burning off of the exhaust.

I got just about an hour out of it then it was all done. The tranny came
apart and both axle bearings fell out. The engine first died a couple of
times then puked oil all over my driveway. Something in the clutch sounds
like a cross between a bucket of bolts and shattering glass when it is
disengaged.

No, it wasn't a new CRF250X. It (was) my new 10HP snowblower. The POS
completely self-destructed during it's first outing. Thank god for ATV
plows and lax retail return policies.

Jay

I think you should just put studs on the XR and skip clearing the driveway.

Don't use Jay's experience as a guide, he could break an iron ingot.

(Jay, I can't remember why I ever stopped breaking your balls, but
seeing as it's a New Year and all, it seemed like a great time to
start back up).

I studded my XR 3 weeks ago after our second snow storm, in preparation for
my vacation during the Holiday season. The next day it got warm and rained.
It stayed warm. I threw out my back hoisting my bike onto the stand when I
studded it, and by the time my back was ready to ride, the snow and ice had
melted to the point that I couldn't use my studded tires - I couldn't see
trashing them on the first ride out. I prayed for cold and snow, just so I
wouldn't have to change my tires back to standard knobs - the only thing
worse than changing a tire is changing one with screws in it. I finally
gave up last weekend and spent two hours changing my tires back to rubber
(F**k), then went for a ride. 100 yards into the woods I slipped on a big
patch of ice and went down, snapping off my clutch lever. F**k. I went
home and changed levers, but (as it turns out) forgot to re-tighten my
barkbuster clamp bolts. I went back out and did about 20 tough miles that
day - I had a good ride - but lost one of my barkbuster clamp bolts. The
next day it got cold, everything froze then it snowed. Tomorrow it's going
to drop to -5F. I have to change my tires again. F**k.

I don't think you can avoid it. It was a Troy-built (MTD,Yardman -
depending on store) - with a Tecumseh 'Snow King' motor (also used on Ariens
and just about every other brand that I've seen).

I just got one that was built on Friday right after the 2:00 crack break (as
usual).

more likely regulated in America
(you are not aloud to ship stuff with oil in it unless
it is shipped in a UN rated container complete
with MSDS 24 hour hot line info & all the HAZ MAT
placarding) But of course it's perfectly fine to drive
a Ford Pinto down the street???
