I am currently considering buying a KPX Z-200 Dirt bike. Does anyone
have any experience with these bikes? I have one friend who purchased
one a year ago and says that it compares surprisingly well with a
Honda XR200, but I would like to hear some more inputs before I spend
my hard earned money.

Here is a link to the bike: http://www.kpxmotors.com/z200.html -
seems like a good value to me.

Thanks,
Russel

Russ, I don't have any experience with that bike, but I hate
manufacturers who tactfully avoid mentioning the country of origin. Is
this thing from Mexico? China? Europe? Africa? Who knows!

I just visited my cousin here in Dallas last week and he's having
a real go at being an "Odes" dealer rep. Odes are Chinese-manufactured
bikes and I was able to get a first-hand look at some of their
products and inquire about pricing and support. It was an informative
visit.

I've no doubt that the Chinese motorcycle industry will eventually
get a foothold in the American marketplace, but it won't be soon and,
when it comes, it won't be cheap (as it is now). Current drawbacks
include inferior quality and workmanship, little or no support and
long waits for parts. Conversely, the only positive is the immediate
gratification of a lower initial price (compared to Japanese makes).

By the time the aforementioned drawbacks are addressed and
rectified, the lure of low price will be a thing of the past.... a
"catch-22," if you will. Suggesting that you really do get what you
pay for.

If you can afford a $2,000 "disposable" bike like the Z-200, then
you'd really be better off with a Yamaha RT-180 or XR-200 from the
early '90s for the same price. A new rear sprocket, for example, will
be MUCH easier to find relatively quickly.

That's my 2 cents.

A friend bought his kid a similar off-brand bike, maybe that one, don't
know, but the engine blew up within 3 days and guess what? The dealer
wouldn't warranty and had NO idea how to fix it. It would scare the heck
out of me to buy one.

Aside from that, it's listed at 275 pounds! The resale value has to
be close to nothing. Haven't seen a lot of places to get KPX parts
either. I'd run far, far away from that.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

By an old IT, XR or something. That KPX thing's a rolling hunk of
shit. But it's not the worst. You want the worst? The local Pep Boys
began selling really cheap versions of the pocketbike crotch rockets.
These things are so damn cheap they have the same style of collapsable
handlebars that you find on the fold-up aluminum scooters that were
all the rage two or three years ago. A few weeks later, they added
mini dirt bikes...then this full-sized thing that I swear rattles when
you sneeze within five feet of it. Pep Boys is crap and these cheap
ass dirt bikes are crap...they're a death trap, a suicide rap...get
out while you're young, Russ.

Well, I never heard about KPX bikes, but I have two cents to add: (they might worth a third less in
US)
- They are good looking!
- If they had USD forks, I'd say it's a Hyosung RX (these are made in Korea), there are parts that
are exactly equal. A good looking bike (thought I find the KPX prettier), until you ride it (no need
to ride hard), that's when it start falling apart, breaking and leaving you stranded in middle of
nowhere. Worst if there's a goose (or cow) chasing you down that trail...

A bonus cent: I liked the website. Fast and easy to browse. Way better than Honda's. I'm not a
webpage designer, see my own website and you'll know what I mean... I'm just saying that I liked the
layout.

Hi Russel,

I purchased one of these dirt bikes
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.kpxmotors.com/motorcycle.html" target="_blank">http://www.kpxmotors.com/motorcycle.html</a> from KPX about a year ago.
I've been happy with the bike; It performs as well as a Honda or
Yamaha at essentially half of the cost. It even comes with an
electric start and a few other features that the Japanese bikes don't
seem to have, and realistically it seems to be virtually the same bike
assembled at another factory. Half of the parts are interchangable.
My son dropped the bike about a month after we got it, and KPX
supplied us with the new body work and a brake lever that was broken.
I'm considering buying a few more for them for resale purposes when I
get my tax refund. Anyway, I say go for it!

I have to agree with everyone here. Your best bet is to find a good
used name brand, it probably won't lose that much value when/if you
resale it. They are easy to get parts for, and have great
reliability.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Ralph ... you sound like a KPX salesperson. Google says you haven't ever
posted using that name or email.

Russel is a nice guy trying to buy a bike on a budget, you wouldn't steer
him wrong would you?

Interesting. Ralph, can you tell us where the KPX bikes are
manufactured? I'm curious. Not that it matters. <g>

WOW!!! 13 horses! <neeeiieeeeiiieeeeieeeieieieieieeieigh!>

75mph my ass! Perhaps if an out of control big rig nailed you from
behind after its brakes went on that looooong downhill gradient and
you were playing the role of hood ornament, you might see 75mph on
that thing. I can think of no other situation where that would
otherwise be the case.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hey it might have the right gearing to go 75mph! It just might take an
hour ot two and going downhill!
