I have a bitch inre to the situation in the local ABATE chapter. I wouldn't
be surprised if it was coming up in other chapters. I'm going to check other
NGs, but figured it would be pertinent here. Shoot me if it isn't...
It was presented to us that a "Democrat Caucus" "emmisary" has been actively
soliciting Democrat politicians from our chapter. This, evidently, to find
ways to oppose the "Current Administration", and it's "War on Terror" by
convincing Democrat Lawmakers to support anti-helmet legislation, and allow
our chapter to support them completely on matters that oppose the Bush
Administration.
The was it was explained by our co-ordinator, that it is the main goal of
this to actively oppose the "Patriot Act" and the "Infringement of
Liberties" that we were "Hoodwinked into" by "911". The fact that we were
BOMBED is not an obvious conclusion.
Among these dastardly things done to us by the "Patriot Act" are the
"Increased Scrutiny" on "Black Jacketed Motorcycle Riders", and that "Now,
any group of us motorcycle riders can be targeted as 'terrorists".
I would suggest that MY reading of this Patriot Act would actually, along
with ACTUAL Terrorists, threaten those of us "black Jacketed Bike Riders,
that are involved in such things as "drug rings" or "theft rings" and other
"criminal organizations" within "our ranks".
IMHO, to form an alliance with Democrat Lawmakers, who traditionally and
nearly to a person support helmet imposition, gun confiscation for law
abiding citizens, illegal siezure of property without due process,
confiscatory taxes, harley removing EPA standards, and ALL manner of
Governmental Control, to oppose sweeping anti-crime legislation and "privacy
invasion" as embodied by the "Patriot Act" is ridiculous.
They obviously just Hate George Bush and figure that we are now to be
carrying water for ANY Anti-Bush cause.
I myself know of NO ONE who has been busted for drugs, stealing property, or
other anti-ABATE activities of late, that were not duly involved in same
because o this dastardly "Partriot Act". I think everybody in "our circles"
knows who these have been.
In addition to this, our chapter seems to have been lately kissing the asses
of "patch holders", by say offering them reduced gate charges at our
functions.
I might additionally state that if ANYBODY is worried about being the
subject of this dastardly "Patriot Act" it is more than probably people or
groups that are involved in: Money Laundering, Drug Sales Rings, Bike or
other Property Stealing Groups. Do I think that these are things that ABATE
members are involved in? No.
Patch Holders?
I dunno.
You tell me.
Regardless of my history, I am more opposed to terrorists, drug ring, theft
ring, criminal gang members, riding, walking OR flying, and other criminals
that are the directly stated subjects and targets of the Patriot Act.
For my money they can lock every god damned one of them up if they are
involved with these things.
I am not going to be renewing with ABATE. Not if they are going to spend my
time and money carrrying water for patch holders, OR Democrats. Before you
know it, we'll be watching their bikes at swap meets, and registering
Democrat Voters while we "prospect".
I'll be glad to print out any replies to my next and probably last ABATE
meeting a month from now.
Thanks.

Very pertinent.

I am a chapter coordinator. I do not oppose the Bush administration.

I do oppose the patriot act that eats away at all of our rights. I
personally believe that it was a *temporarily* neccessary measure. The
*crisis* is over. Yeah, there are terrorists out there still, but we
have sufficient laws to go after them *without* violating anyone's rights.

Any group of anyone. It is not just motorcyclists. Any group can be
targeted by any law enforcement agency for any or no reason. No need
for warrants, or anything that protects your rights. Ever been stopped
by that nutso cop? What if you had no rights? He could be a real pain
in your butt if he faces no consequences.

Bust them. But, do it legally. Go get a warrant. Or do you want your
door busted down just because you look like a bad guy. They don't need
no steenkin 'probable cause.'

I'll have to do some looking into that involvement. As far as I know,
ABATE of NM does not support either party although we do support or
oppose certain legislation.

What state? What chapter? I am not anti Bush.

I know of no cases of abuse either, yet. I value my rights and don't
want to see them taken away.

Again, where? Do you attend meetings? Made your views known in
meetings? I hope so. As coordinator, I don't enforce views, I value
members' views.

Agreed. I'm not so much worried about the patriot act itself, but that
it is one step towards removing rights that have been disappearing for
years under both democrats and republicans. As a society, we've laid
down and let laws be passed without opposition letting our government
tell us what we must do. I happen to believe that the government does
not have the right to come into my home without reason. Under the
patriot act, they can. That doesn't mean they will, but it bothers me
that they can.

I am opposed to those things too. We already have laws against all of
those things. If you are suspected, law enforcement can investigate.
If the investigation produces evidence, law enforcement can get a
warrant. They do not need the right to skip the process that was put
into place to protect the innocent.

Sure. What about the innocent that was scooped up too? We don't need
no steenkin trial. Lock him up.

I'm sad to hear that. Make your views known. There may be a majority
of members that feel as you do.

Please do. If nothing else, it will start some healthy debate.

You're welcome. I hope that you take my reply in the manner it was
intended. You have got me thinking more about the issue. I hope I have
done the same with you. Like I said, good healthy debate.
I'm mailing this to myself as well. There are points that you made that
require further investigation. I want a printed copy as well.

I'll get more to you, as I have time this or tomorrow evening. I think it
has to do with a co-ordinator that ha some real strange views. Please don't
think that I"m a "yuppie" that's disconnected from ANY part of life or life
around motorcycle groups OR people. I just thougght it was pushing an " I
wish things were different" wish at a time when we ARE at war. Lot's of
thngs have changed.
Gotta run. I'll post more in the next day or so.
Thanks..

I didn't take your post any other way than concerned member not agreeing
with chapter stand on issues. That's not a bad thing at all. If it is
just the coordinator's views, it may be time for a new coordinator if
many of your chapter's members agree.
