I've just sold the Fireblade so I can now get myself an enduro bike.
I'll do a little bit of motocross, but it needs to be road legal so I can
ride the trails. I have about 1700 GBP.
I thought about a Honda CRM 250, or a XR400.
Kawasaki KDX 200 or 220.
Gas Gas EC300
or a Suzuki RMX 250.
I might even be persuaded to buy a full on MXer and try to get a daylight
license on it for
the trails.
What do you lot think?

me thinking for myself thinks "go Linger!!"
Any of those bikes will provide fun in large amounts.
Try and get as much sadletime as you can, on as many different bikes as you
can.
Visit dealers, just to sit on bikes, so you get a feel for what bike suits
you.

Well I ride most weekends on a CCM 604 which is far to heavy for
tight trails and Enduro work.
I also ride MX on a friends KX 125 which is perfect but the power wouldn't
be enough
for the trails and the road.
So I sort of know what I want. A 250 2stroke.
But what about reliability? An xr 400 makes more sense.
I've ridden both the 400, the 600 and the 650. I liked the power of the 600
bikes but
enjoyed the lightness of the 400.
Decisions decisions!

If you think the XR4 is light, you're going to be pretty amazed at any
of the 2 strokes you mentioned. The KDXs are great trail bikes out of
the box, but I doubt they'd have enough motor for the street. The CR
and RM would have a lot more power, but I can't imagine putting any
highway miles on them. Can you license 2 strokes for street use
there?

Yeah, we can register MX bikes as long as they pass a test and have road
legal stuff on them.

You'll probably spend the least amount of time and money maintaining the
XR400. XR's are fairly bulletproof.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: What Bike? |

But not fireproof. A friend of mine has just offered me one that caught
light in his workshop. He has all the new bits to put on.
I'll go round and have a look, see if its not too bad.

There was an article in one of the recent issues of Australasian
Dirtbike where some aussie blokes converted an XR400 to electric start <!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: What Bike? |

Honda Brasil sells a bike with the XR400 engine with e-start. This
bike is called "NX4 Falcon", it's a dual sport. Has the same frame of
XR400 with softer and with less travel suspensions. Having compared
both bikes closely, I say, for sure, that a XR400 with e-start is
possible and not hard to do. The only thing that would be tricky, is
the e-start mount holes. They are on case halves, the e-start motor
is behind the cylinder, under the carburetor. On the NX4, the cases
have a pair threaded holes, the XR400 doesn't have them. How one would
drill the case and not ruin it, I don't know. Other than that, just
the right hand engine side cover should be replaced. I didn't see the
internals, but saying by the shape of the cases, there are plenty room
on the XR400 engine to accommodate the e-start gears.
Better yet is buy a NX4 engine and put the XR400 cam on it (the only
difference on the engines). I've heard of someone doing that, but
never saw any bike like this...

I'm really not bothered about kickstart.
And I discussed this down there. The electric button from the quad TRX bolts
virtually straight on.

Yup, that's what they used but it wasn't quite as simple as you suggest
