When the woods open up - I was out riding in the area this past Sunday. I typically ride really tight trails in the woods, which kind of fits my trials mind set. The guy I was riding with has a new DRZ400 with a gas tank, so it's not the best machine..

2nd bike for woods? - Or am I being a wuss. You tell me. Just started dirt biking after years and years of street and lots of track days. Thanks to for taking me out on my 1st ride last year and letting me crash his GasGas. Are you around? Anyhow I've been..

FS: 2002 KX310 set up for woods - I am posting this for a friend. Reggie did the latest engine work on this bike for Chris. He rode it 10 days ago (at Breezy Hills), and told me it was very strong and smooth. You might know Chris if you've come to the Wudi rides. Jim Cook..

What's your h-bar width for the woods - Got a set of KX high ProTaper Contour's from Blanco to try on my KLX450. They're cut to I used 28.25 on my YZ250. What's everyone else using?

Best chest protector for woods riding? - I know that chest are mainly for roost hitting your chest, but I'm looking for torso from falls when riding in the woods. I've tried on a few, and they don't cover the sides too well. Overall, what brand would give the most..

A friend of mine can buy a '94 YZ250 for less than a grand, and it
needs 'a little work'. Anyone ever use one of these for trail
riding? I know you can drop some coin and make it work, but at what
cost? Flywheel weight, armor and gearing changes, but y'all think it
would be worth it?

I had a '94 YZ250 for about 1 year. I broke my wrist coming up short
on double jump and crashed into a quad that decided to slow up. This
was my 1st bike after breaking my neck and back. Anyway, I really
liked the '94 YZ250. It make good low-end and mid-range power. The
top-end was OK, but it prefered to be short shifted. It will make a
good off-road bike. A flywheel weight will keep it from stalling so
easy. It was a great wheelie bike as was my '97 YZ250.

What else does this YZ need?

I'd like to hear more about YZ woodsability too. I know of an '01 that
can be had for not much more than a grand, and it's supposed to be
clean and in good shape. I've been sorta tempted to go and look at it,
but not enough to actually act on it. Yet.

Thanks, Bax. It needs maintenance, but not sure what yet. I'll go
look at it with him when I get back from WUDI (nyaa nyaa) and get back
to y'all.

Before KTM took off in 1998, the YZ250 was the bike to have in the
woods. I never heard of GasGas until Jim Cook came along. The YZ's
were fast, but not hyper. I have owned a '94 and '97 YZ250. The '94
was a danm good bike. I don't think the '97 was much better, but I
liked it. I have ridden the newer YZ250s, but I prefer the '91-'98
motors better. They are less powerful, but easy to ride hard. I
still want a YZ125. Think of Eric's GasGas 250 with just a little
more pipey feel to it and you have my old '97 YZ250. Even the
suspension was good for fast hare scrambles, but I ran my set-up stiff
for the high speed Texas riding.

I know an awful lot of folks that race them and love them. Not in
MX form, but w/flywheel weight, Gnarly pipe, etc. The ones I'm
familiar with are more current models.

I remember working checks back in '94/'95. The '94 YZ & WR250
riders were much more likely to, when taking off, break traction in
the sand and jump sideways than most of the other two stroke riders.
(2/1)

A lot of riders put in the "long rod" kit (I think it was.) from the
'95 year model YZ engines to smooth out the delivery.

I rode a brand new '94 YZ250 in one hare scrambles race at Budds Creek
and it was the most awful ride I've ever had. It beat me half to
death and I gave up after about 40 minutes. My KX500 is way easier to
ride in the woods.

Well, my '94 YZ was purchased used from a Senior C rider after 1 year
of cross country racing in Texas. The previous owner had the
suspension revalved at Scotts Performance and worked well for me. I
thought the power was great and easy to use, but what do I know. It
was my 1st bike after breaking my neck and back in the local Pro
class. I know more about bike set-up now and I think a different
needle and possibly a slide change will completely change the nature
of the YZ beast.

Suspension setup is the key. The YZ I rode must have been set up for
a rider who was a 500 pound sumo-wrestler and part time Ninja.

Taking a stock motocross bike into the woods is nuts. With the
suspension reworked and a flywheel weight, there's nothing better.

I can't think of a better all around bike that does everything well.
As a trail bike or woods bike it would be hard to beat except by a
bike that costs a whole lot more. The YZ is a stable ride even for
newbies. I wouldn't look any further. OF

You're over looking the tm400 or mx360
i seem to remember their off road capabilities as
a Thrill like none other in the woods.
