It's been a long time since I have been able to get out on the
motorcycle alone for a real long trip. Come July however, I'm going
to be hitting the trail for an extended period.
The base of the trip is Blowing Rock, NC to Flagstaff, Arizona (and
back of course).
I haven't figured out my whole itenarary. I know OK City and
Nashville are two stops (I have family those places I don't get to see
often).
The rest is kind of up for grabs, thought the South Rim of the Grand
Canyon is my final destination.
It looks like for the most part I will be doing the major portions of
the route on I-40 - though I'm open to other routes that are fairly
direct.
I have about 9 days available for the whole tour.
I really look forward to getting out alone. I have not had a trip
like this for 4 years and never on my current ride.
Anyone on the route have good suggestions for places to see? My last
big trip like this was more northerly, so the southern route is going
to be all new for me. >> Stay informed about: 4K+ trip this summer. YES! |

Good on you. I am looking forward to a couple of good runs myself
this summer. As much as I like riding with friends I still enjoy
having the road and the trip to myself. I have never failed to meet
some interesting personalities while touring by myself.
Ride safe, enjoy and fill us in on the trip when you are back.

There's something about a solo trip that cannot be beat. Even though
my trip is not until July, I am doing all kinds of wishful planning.
I'll have to trim some of that down, and by the time I actually go
will have the main itenarary thought out. I have a fair amount of
family on the route, that I have not seen in years. I plan on bumming
a bed and a meal from them as I pass through - though visiting them is
the main priority.
My biggest decision is whether or not to buy a nice digital camera for
the trip. I have a great prosumer Nikon, with a plethora of lenses.
But I have narrowed it down to the camera and three of the lenses, and
tripod. If I get a digital, I'll have to leave that Nikon at home.
Right now, I'm still in the excited stage so I haven't begun
prioritizing what I'm going to take other than the mandatory trip
gear.

Thanks Moto, but this summer at least I won't be changing plans.
The I-40 corridor trip was decided upon by family locations.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 4K+ trip this summer. YES! |

Bring half as much stuff, and twice as much money as you think you need.
I would never take a road trip without two cameras- one digital, one
35mm compact. Use both cameras at least a few shots at each locale, in
case Murphy strikes. I still have my Olympus XA with the A11 removable
flash unit, very compact, especially without the flash attached.
Rangefinder focus. High quality 35mm F2.8 lens, I haven't found the
lack of zoom to be a problem.

I agree about two cameras, and actually two cameras is the plan. I
ALWAYS carry my little Leica 35mm, I slip it in my pocket about
everyday so it's inclusion or non-inclusion on the trip wasn't even a
thought.. The question was about my second camera (though I didn't
state is as such). The reason I would leave my Nikon (if I get a
digital) is because the Kodak I'm looking at has a N90 body with a
Kodak digital back, and would accept all my current lenses.
And while you may have found one lens to be suffecient, I don't. Not
for my photo preferences. I HAVE to have my portrait lens (I'm more
interested in portraits than landscapes), and a couple of other lenses
are necessities to me as well.
Packing shouldn't be a problem. I have more space in my hard bags and
room for additional bags than I ever did on my old CB750C and I took
tons of similar trips on it carrying more camera equipment and luggage
than I'm planning on taking this trip.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 4K+ trip this summer. YES! |

Is it really necessary to actually bring money anywhere these days? Cash
dispensing machines are everywhere, or at least everywhere where one can
Spend any money. Or did you just mean double your expected budget?

The latter. I still think it's a good idea to have a a couple of
hundred bucks cash in case the cash machines go offline for a while.
There are still lots of little tiny towns where you might want to
exchange cash for goods where they don't have a cash machine, or
if you can't use/prefer to avoid using a credit card.

If you come anywhere close to Houston, give me a yell. We'll get

Mag,
I haven't figured out my route past OK City yet. Staying on I-40 of
course would keep me well north of Houston. But I have been eyeing a
more southerly root for the leg back.
I'll let you know. It's looking like July 9-18 will be the trip
dates.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 4K+ trip this summer. YES! |

I figured you'd be pretty far north, but thought I'd throw my hat in
anyway. We'll be back from our whitewater trip July 5, so I'll shoot
you my digits backchannel in case you head back through our area.

A few years ago my Olympus D-460 was stolen. It was a nice compact
take anywhere camera. I replaced it with an UZI 10X Optical zoom 500
option camera. While it takes great pictures it is too bulky to take
on a casual trip. There are some fine compact digitals out there for
a good price. I will likely pick up one of those before I head out on
the NART this summer.

Big time CBer. That's how Duane and I met. We had a local group that
talked on Ch 15 all night. (I worked shift at a chem plant) We got
everyone together at an all night bakery in town for a "coffee break".
That's where I met him. On his 18th birthday. I had an awesome base
station and when skip was rolling, talked to folks all over the place.
Got Venezuela one night. So, no, I wasn't a trucker, but I can
ratchetjaw with the best of them.
