Or am I being a wuss. You tell me.

Just started dirt biking after years and years of street and lots of
track days. Thanks to Peckhammer for taking me out on my 1st ride last
year and letting me crash his GasGas. Are you around?

Anyhow I've been riding the hell out of my XR400 in the woods of
Western WA, and last weekend we went to the Eddieville GP course. I
had a blast, but this XR is kicking my ass. I easily had the heaviest
bike out there. Looking at all the bikes, you'd think nothing is sold
except KTMs and CRF's.

I have no illusions, I'm a slow newbie and the XR is real easy to ride
slow. I'm in good shape but the bike is a handfull. My feeling is to
stick with the XR and get better before I trade it. But on the other
hand I hardly ever see 3rd gear around here.

I plan on riding the Desert 100 in the old-man newbie group. Any tips?

Have you looked at the CRF or the KTM?

Go buy and old Suzuki TM 400 and trail ride it. When you go back to the
XR 400 it will feel like dancing with a balerina. OF

Ah well I'm just looking for somebody to tell me to just stick with the
XR cuz that's how it's supposed to be, or that I'm crazy and should go
get a KDX. My buddy has a WR250, I'm anxious to try it out and feel
the difference.

I owned a 1983 XR450 (I think it was a 450, anyway, it was the one near
that). I now own a CRF250X. Both are better bikes than I am. The CRF is
WAY better.....

I had both for years and loved it. I just recently sold my trail bike (it
had taken lots of abuse) and I am in the process of converting my old track
bike to my new trail bike. I'm having a hard time deciding on what to get
for my next track bike.

properly set up gas gas is hard to beat.

xr600r is a better woods bike in my opinion... turns nicer mellow
engine and isn't significantly heavier...LOL

kdx200 with a large rear sprocket comes to mind.

lots of water and radio communications
(incase cell phone doesn't work) in the
old man newbie group you should do
fine with the other sand baggers try and
keep an eye out for the guy with a lot of
tools & supplies and ride near them.
move slow conserve energy because the
desert will sap you stamina

Woods bikes are for the woods.

Motocross bikes are for the track.

It took me a while to learn this but now I have 3 bikes.

YZ125 = track
CRF250 = track
KTM200EXC = woods

Life should be like this.

I can't completely agree. It really depends on the woods and the type
of tracks. I can spin a few clickers on my GasGas and moto just fine.
I might feel differently if I loaded up to ride a track specifically,
but I don't. I want a YZ125 for woods riding. I need to stay
aggressive and a 125 will force the issue.

OK, I rode XR's for 20 years before switching to a 2-stroke.
I always said that would happen when I became old & infirm.

The XR is a great trail bike. It will take you just about anywhere
you want to go and be very comfortable. Push it to race pace and
you are asking for pain and non-fun activities.

You should look at the KTM 450 4-stroke. The KDX <poodle-
bike> would also be a good choice.

after riding a gas gas you really can't do better <grin>
xr's are fine just not light, lighter and easy steering is
what you want in the woods (unless you're in it for
the workout)

"But on the XR I can be a wuss and tractor-motor through anything, and
I'll get in better shape. It's like driving a Sherman tank through the
woods. No I guess that'd be an XR650."

You just perfectly described the XR650L. The throttle has a setting
called 'tractor' that won't spin the back wheel, it just keeps it
chugging up,over,through anything.
Instead of a tractor track its got a Teraflex tire that's just as
intimidating.

You'll have to learn to ride it. Smile While the KTM EXC bikes (all sizes)
have good torque down low for 2 strokes, they aren't as luggable as an
XR4. I went from an XR4 to a KTM300. A pretty good switch. While I'm
not crazy about 4 strokes, I will admit that my friends KTM 450 is more
user friendly than mine.
