Heya , I have a 1999 harley sportster with 3500 miles
The bike runs great , but for some reason when I have a passenger on the bike and I get on the throttle a little bit I get like a rythmic clanky noise that is coming from somewhere on the moter . It also seems prone to make this noise more often when the bike get warm. For instance I pulled off the road into a sandy spot the other day and when I went to take off in the sand It did not want to move forward very well , it just kept making the clanky rythmic sound . Now the only modifications i make to the bike was putting on some aftermarked sip ons .
Hope the information is enough
Thanks alot

Sounds like in the installation of your slip ons you may have gotten
some of your pink frillies stuck in the exhaust pipe. Take it back off
and see if there is anything in there, then you may have to JB weld
them on solid to avoid this problem in the future. I'm thirsty...

Taking into account the bike is in poor condition given its never ridden Id
make almost a sure bet and say youve a sticky lifter making that noise. Try
riding your bike sometime. Ill bet a dollar to a donut all your gaskets are
about to go to shit. Unless it has solid lifters, which would mean youre in
even worse shape. Pray its your lifters sticking due to lack of use.
Lets compare what youre doing to your bike, in contrast to mine. Ive more
rust on my 93 sporty, than you probably have chrome. And judging based on
the fact that you dont ride your bike, I feel safe in assuming youve tons of
chrome. I may not wash or polish my bike, but I ride it. Thus its
internals are in good shape, as well as its gaskets. Yours are ready to go
to shit. I hope that was a typo on your mileage. The acid buildup from
short trips, startings and idlings, etc., have certainly chewed into your
bikes internals by now. A shame.
Ive only 7500 miles on my odo. But thats due to it being taken off a 93
that was wrecked by a guy who never rode his bike. (wish the rest of my
bike was a purty as my new odo.)

Piggyback here since I didn't reply to the original. I'm amazed nobody
has gotten this one. Lean carb and/or too high a gear causing a knock
under load.
If you have a passenger you need to get the rpm up before you get on it.
When in sand you need to get the rpm up before you engage clutch. Low
rpm under load will usually result in knock.

Yeah, that explains that trolls loss of traction and "rythmic clank".<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 1999 harley sportster rapping noise |

Sounds like you might be getting some predetonation (spark
knock). Try using premium gas instead and see if it clears up
or diminishes. Your aftermarket slip-ons might be
contributing to that if they are free-er breathing than the
OEM's, unless you rejetted the carb.

Did I say you never rode your bike? I made a snide comment that you should
"ride your bike sometime." Thats all. Didnt know it wasnt yours until
lately. Sorry for the implication. Really though, unless its vibrational
and a thumpy type noise Id bet its one of your lifters. I couldnt ride my
bike for about 6 months and had a sticky lifter making all sorts of smacking
metal on metal rythmic rapping noises when I got back on. Sometimes varnish
builds up on/in hydraulic lifters and goofs them up for a while.
Thats where I would look first. Its a cheap fix. Take it out, soak in gas,
dry, fill with oil, replace. Easy. good luck. Seriously doubt its your
carb though, but if you richen it up and the sound goes away you were
running lean and it was knocking. Does it only happen when you lug it?
(really slow RPM acceleration.)
In regard to the low milage, thats really bad for a bike. Especially a
bike. Infrequent startings and idlings build up condensation within the
motor housing and then contribute to acid formation that can really eat at
things. But it sounds like you may already know that. Again, sorry for my
tone. Just turned 39 and am getting crochity in, what is to me, my old age.
I know 70 year olds more active than I...
