How much are they asking? '95 through '97 were structurally the same
with minor variation.

I have a '97 MXC, Tim H has a '95 EXC (I beleive) and Geoff A. had a
'97 360 EXC.

The 250-300-360 all had/have the same bottom end so you could make a
300 into a 250 if you wanted.
The regular-side-up 50mm Marzzochi suspension is good and can be
really great with some valving.
My data has it at 238lbs and making 41.5 hp.
It's tall and a bit long, which suits me fine at 6'-1" but I needed to
move the handlebars up and forward, to open-up my riding position and
put more weight on the front. If I get lazy and sit back and just
steer it I tend towash the front and lowside.
The seat is a freaking purple monkeybutt brick - change the foam and
re-cover it or grow some steel in your shorts.
For me the radiators are tucked well-in and are small, so it can
overheat at length under load in higher altitudes - like going up a
steep silty trail in Idaho. Or that's just my inept riding style.
I made some 2-inch stand-offs for the shrouds, to get more air into
them.
The rear link is conventional so it needs lube and attention at least
yearly.
The ignition cover stator-side isn't totally waterproof, and the
ferrule where the clutch cable goes into the case on that side needs a
good dab of silicone RTV to help seal out water entry. My rusty
stator nevertheless preforms and functions without incident.

The gas tank in ginormous and I managed to do over 70 miles before
going on reserve and several more before totally dry. Then I took off
my damn pinching boots and threw them in the trees...

The ginormous tank inhibits easy access to the tiny choke push-up
button up on top of the carb.
I like my '97 but changed the plastic to black.

Hey, Tim, want some pumpkin plastic in good shape with stickers?
I gotta do somethign about all the crap in my garage.

I echo these sentiments with one caveat. My '97 (basically the same) would
overheat with lots of low speed work and clutch slipping. Gear down if
that's what you ride.

I used to get almost 80 miles out of a tank in woods riding. Amazing. I
think it was 3.8 gallons.

I actually liked the seat.!???

I'll second that. My 95 mxc 300 threw me down a lot for that reason.
Especially downhill (being a trials guy I want to keep my weight way
back... )

Other than that I loved that bike. Wish it hadn't gotten stolen.

I am thinking of getting a 95 - 98 300EXC. I currently have a 95 YZ250 and
would like to have a light, etc. Anyone know how power compares between
these two?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you're talking stock bikes, then the 300 will give you noticeably more
tork on the bottom end, good lug .. and good power throughout the rpm range.

I will agree with one exception. There was a change between 96 and 97.
They went to a different electronics package that greatly reduced the
number of falied magnetos. I do not remember the prior or the "new"
package, but one of the issues with the older ones were some electronics
gremlins.

Great bike. Get the forks valved and sprung for your weight, drop a FMF
burly pipe and turbo core II silencer/SA on it and have a blast.

Oh, and KTMS of that period were notably rich from the fctory. If they
previous owner didn't lean it out a ton, it will run like crap. IIRC, I
went down 2.5 steps on the main, 2 on the pilot, a leaner needle, and
one step leaner on the slide. Made a friggin enormous difference.

I had a 95 KTM 300 it was a really good bike. The 95 was a bear to jet due to
heating issues if memory serves me it was actually a 250 punched out which
caused engine temperatures to change quickly. Handling was OK and the
suspension was good once you figured it out,,,,I remember running one weight of
fork oil in one tube and another weight in the other since one leg took care of
rebound and the other compression. The ignition was another issue the Semi Simi
???(spelling) would slowly go sour and material would flack from the flywheel
holding the magnets. OK those were some bad points but the best thing about the
95-300 was it would lug down beyond a walk and just keep chugging, it amazed me
how many times that thing saved my bacon because I would screw up and the thing
would just keep running on a side hill at a snails pace. The bike was on the
heavy side compared the new generation frames of 98 and newer. The 95- 300 was
a good bike and will serve you well but if it were me, I'd look for 98 & newer.

Although there were major changes in 1998, personally, I'd kick that
up to "99 or newer", the 98 didn't have the hydraulic clutch did it?
