I just bought one of these great bikes but it has this really loud,
obnoxious pipe on it. The Kerker Super Trap exhaust. Does anyone know of a
pipe that was sold for this bike that made a smooth, very deep exhaust note?
That's what I want for my bike... Thanks!

Super Traps are obnoxious to some because they employ only metal plates to quill
noise but as the exhaust note slaps the metal it make a raspy harsh sound
whereas pipes that employ sound proof material such as fiber glass quill just as
much noise but the exhaust note gets lost in the material and emits a deep
muffled sound that's more pleasing to the ear...

Supertrap pipe tuning is done with discs. More discs, less noise, or
the other way around: hell if I remember..

So play with the discs. I remember going through this exercise on my
FJ1100, way back when.

If you remove a few disks from the stack at the end of the pipe, there
will be less noise, but you will be trapping more heat in the pipe. The
temperature of the hot gasses in the pipe determine the speed of sound
through the gasses and this determines what RPM the pipe "tunes" at.
You can take out too many disks and really restrict the exhaust flow,
like stuffing a potato up your exhaust pipe....

Wow thanks for the great .pdf. Maybe I can adhere these little metal disks
together so that the damn things don't rattle against eachother. The
raspyness is rediculous. I wouldn't mind if it were loud, but loud and
raspy just sounds like crap. Thanks for the info again...

Thanks I will definitely try removing some of these disks. It looks like I
have a lot of disks (like 12 maybe) sticking out of the end of the pipe so
I'll bet I can remove lots of them and make it quieter. It's nice that
removing them makes it quieter rather than adding them, because I don't have
any to add! What about repacking the can with more/different insulating
material?

Thanks I will fool around with the disks when I get a chance. The guy that
sold me the bike said I could fool with the number of disks to make changes
in the air flow of the pipes, so it will be fun to fool with. Smile How quiet
could you get your Yamaha to get? Could you tell any performance
differences?

P.S. You lucky bastard you have my dream bike, the 1999 CBR1100xx.... Damn
that's a great machine.

http://www.supertrapp.com/disc_technology/disc_technology.htm

Supertrapp claims that removing disks will improve the tone of the
pipe, but I don't remember if the muffler was repackable or not...

I know you want that "mellow" glass pack sound so your bike will sound
like a low-riding 1955 Chevy, but the whole advantage of the Supertrapp
system to me was to eliminate fiberglass packing that would just blow
out every few thousand miles...

The Kerker megaphone repacking kits used to cost about $10 with a
special fiberglass that would blow out every time the engine was run
hard, so many riders would just run their pipes noisy and if they got
an excessive noise citation , they'd reinstall their stock pipes for
just long enough to clear the ticket...

A guy told me that he used to re-pack his blown out glass packs with
steel wool, but that stuff would get hot and blow sparks out the tail
pipe...
