Thanks to all who have given advice on the Nighthawk I am trying to
get rolling. Just to let ya know, it was the main fuse I blew and I
have taken care of it (have some extras on hand now too)...
The latest in this saga is that I decided to drian the fuel tank just
in case the gas had been in there over long just sitting and I hadn't
gotten a good look down in there (tank) yet. To my dismay, the tank is
pretty bad off....When I disconected the fuel line...nothing came
out. When I removed the tank and took off the petcock what came out
was brown/red and the petcock itself was rusty/plugged up.
Went to the local dealer to see what a new tank would run...and they
told me it would be $630!!!! Needless to say....that dog don't
hunt....so here is the latest query:
1) Can I salvage this tank with something that will eat up the gunk
and rust? If so where can I get it?
2) If there is nothing I can put in there to clean it out... is it
possible that I could cut this thing in half, clean the inside halves
with some elbow grease and what not, then weld it back together?
3) If #1 and #2 are not options...are there other tanks anyone knows
of which would redilly fit this frame? Any good links on motorcycle
salvage yards any of you can recommend? >> Stay informed about: That 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB700SC... again |

This is a bike worth saving, and spending some cash on.
I might consider the new tank, especially if all the other parts are intact.
I had an 86 Red White and Blue one that I wish I never sold!

Look for a Kreem kit or POR-15.
I have used the Kreem kit twice. It contains a degreasing solvent, a mild
acid for removing rust and a liquid plastic for coating the inside of the
tank.
If it turns out that you have any pinhole leaks that the Kreem doesn't seal,
depaint the area, sandpaper it rough, and apply a daub of JB Weld on the
outside of the tank and let that cure for 16 hours in a warm area.
JB Weld is a grey two part epoxy that is fuel proof and oil proof.

You can get rid of the surface rust inside the tank, sure but it will just
come back in time as water condensates in the tank. You're probably OK with
this so long as the rust has not damaged the petcock threads or the fill
tube.

Sure, anything is possible if you want to pay for it. You're talking a fair
amount of labor for this project. Probably more than the new tank.

A salvage yard should have one, the 85 was a popular bike. Doesn't really
matter if it's scraped up so long as it's clean inside. Then a body shop
could paint it and apply factory decals or even something custom. Probably
looking at about 250.00 total. I just did an eBay search and tanks are
relatively common. Auction #330172934823 looks good, no rust, clean - a
body shop could strip it, hammer and fill it then prime and paint it. I was
quote $150.00 for my 78 CB750 tank and that included factory emblems.

There are a number of kits made for de-rusting and coating motorcycle
gas tanks. They all use an acid to etch away the rust and some sort
of epoxy to seal the bare metal against further rust. Kreem and KBS
are two that have a complete kit. POR-15 is a well-regarded coating
compound but you have to supply your own degreasing solution and acid.

This is NOT an reasonable option.

There MAY be a tank from another model that will fit, but there were
enough of these bikes made so you shouldn't have to make do with a
poorly fitting mismatched tank.
Personally, having gone through the effort of doing this task a handful
of times, I would pony up the $300 plus shipping and get the new tank.

There really is a Rusteze? I thought it was just the medicated bumper
ointment from the movie 'Cars'

Get the tank repair kit.
I've used this kit wih excellent results several
years ago. Sealed the tank nicely including
a pinhole type leak near a mount bracket.
Do not use on anything aluminum and be sure
to make some good plugs for the petcock holes
so it doesn't block them. >> Stay informed about: That 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB700SC... again |

This topic was covered extensively in the Yahoo Highthawk group. Plenty
of choices. If it's true that you can get a new tank for around $300,
I'd go that route. Otherwise, keep an eye on ebay and research the tank
repair process. >> Stay informed about: That 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB700SC... again |

Actually, it is Rusteco, but I thought I'd make a funny first.

I had an '85 and, yeah, it was OK bike, and one the best-looking ever,
but it was FAR too gutless down low.
IMO, those old bikes just have too many flaws (chassis, suspension) to
be worth much, anymore. >> Stay informed about: That 1985 Honda Nighthawk CB700SC... again |
