I know what you're saying, Chris, but I remember that one of the
few things I *did* notice the difference on, as a kid riding a GT 80,
was the tires. For a long time I rode with a knobby on back and a
crappy, original trials type tire on front. That front tire was nearly
useless on the wet, slick hills in western Oregon. I can count the
number of times my front end washed out on me!
Of course it probably depends a lot on skill level. If Dave's son
begins to really push the little XR, he'll notice the tire's
shortcomings more. And then again, my trials front tire was a more
extreme difference than the Cheng Shin knobby vs a Dunlop knobby. But
I do believe that kids can notice tire differences. Especially
experienced kids.
By the way, I have the current Dennis Kirk off-road catalog. And
it does indeed appear to be slim pickings for 16" front tires.
Kenda K257D Intermediate terrain 3.00-16 4-ply #64-1144 $27.99
Cheng Shin C183 soft terrain 3.00-16 4-ply #64-506 $23.99
Cheng Shin C755 hard terrain 2.50-16 4-ply #54-1106 $19.99
IRC Mini Cross intermediate terrain 2.50-16 #54-295 $35.99
And that's it. So, if you have to use a 16" front, the C183 might
be an improvement for the XR. Otherwise the suggestions to switch to a
17" rim sure sound attractive. Good luck!
