My son finally out grew his TTR-90 this year so we bought him a 02 XR80 i
found for a killer deal for his first clutch bike. Its a nice bike and all
but it comes with tires which are useless for loose dirt and sand we ride on
here in Texas. I am having little to no luck finding a good front tire for
this bike. All I can find in a 16" front is the same chen shing crap hard
surface stock front tire. Any of you guys found anything better? There are
plenty rear 14" tires available but the 2.50x16" I cant find.

Try denniskirk.com, a little pricey but they stock just about everything.
Also, you can get a CR80 front rim on ebay for like 20 bucks, just lace the
XR hub into it. Now you have a much wider range of selection, and tires
are way cheaper for it. Plus bike will handle better in the loose stuff.
You may have to lower the fork tubes in the clamps, but I doubt it.

Kenda makes a 300x16, probably a step up from a Cheng Shin. If you
wanted to spend a few bucks, you could get the front hub laced up to a
17" rim, there seems to be more tire choices available for 17" fronts.
But then on the other hand, to a kid on an XR80, a tire is a tire is a
tire, he won't know the difference and his friends who don't know the
difference either, won't laugh at him.

Im not worried about what brand the tire is or what people say I just want a
tire that will give him a fighting chance in the sand.

I know what you're saying, Chris, but I remember that one of the
few things I *did* notice the difference on, as a kid riding a GT 80,
was the tires. For a long time I rode with a knobby on back and a
crappy, original trials type tire on front. That front tire was nearly
useless on the wet, slick hills in western Oregon. I can count the
number of times my front end washed out on me!

Of course it probably depends a lot on skill level. If Dave's son
begins to really push the little XR, he'll notice the tire's
shortcomings more. And then again, my trials front tire was a more
extreme difference than the Cheng Shin knobby vs a Dunlop knobby. But
I do believe that kids can notice tire differences. Especially
experienced kids.

By the way, I have the current Dennis Kirk off-road catalog. And
it does indeed appear to be slim pickings for 16" front tires.

Kenda K257D Intermediate terrain 3.00-16 4-ply #64-1144 $27.99
Cheng Shin C183 soft terrain 3.00-16 4-ply #64-506 $23.99
Cheng Shin C755 hard terrain 2.50-16 4-ply #54-1106 $19.99
IRC Mini Cross intermediate terrain 2.50-16 #54-295 $35.99

And that's it. So, if you have to use a 16" front, the C183 might
be an improvement for the XR. Otherwise the suggestions to switch to a
17" rim sure sound attractive. Good luck!

I would try the 300x16 Kenda, the little bit wider width will help it
stay on top of the sand.

Any adverse affects going from a 2.50 to a 3.00?

Tire sizes are kinda strange and vary by manufacturer, one manufacturers
3.00 might be the same size or narrower than another manufacturers 2.50.
In the case of your Son's bike and riding in sand, a tire that is a
little wider will help the front wheel stay up on top of the sand. If
you decide to order that tire, just make sure that you have room for a
tire that may be 1/4" wider on each side.
