| Had my 2003 749 in to Munroe Motors, SF, CA, US for scheduled maintenance.
The service (valve adj, throttle body sync, oil change, etc) + rear brake
pad R&R + steering head bearing adjustment: > $800.
Now, I've put every mile on the bike since mid-February. A second bike
might be in order, and I'm thinking: 2 valves, please.

I am surprised you would need rear brake pads. Mine still look new
after 7,000 miles.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 10000km/6200mi service report |

Holding on hills, and the only other time I use the rear is
the first second or so of heavy breaking at 120+ mph. The fronts
have already been replaced, and both tires, of course.
Lotta hills in SF.
I'm surprised at the steering head, it's the second time
it's needed tightening. Shitty, bumpy streets in SF.
I noticed no one batted an eyelash at the $$$. Y'all must
be experienced ducatisti  <!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 10000km/6200mi service report |

I've had my 749s since Oct 2003, and for those who live in the UK you know
there are not many oppotunities to get out on a bike during the winter here.
I've now done just over 4000 miles, been through 2 rear tyres and 1 front
(was Pirelli std equip Dragon Evo Corsa but replaced now with Diablos) & set
of fron pads. I reckon that the cost of rubber per mile is the same as fuel
at about 10p per mile! Wow!
Cheers

For me, of course, the cost of rubber per mile is more than the cost
of fuel. Std rubber here in the US are Michelin Pilot Sport, which
have an annoying flaw in the front tread design that causes the
contact patch to get smaller as they wear. Reshod with Diablos, very
happy.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 10000km/6200mi service report |

That all sounds very familiar. I change tyres like I change
underpants.
The cost of having a duke is pretty high when it comes to servicing
and tyres/fuel etc. The last service (6000 miles) was painful.
But just hope you never skid on some bad road works and come off at
25mph (really that slow!) and your 749 slides 20 ft on its side.
The cost of repair...... parts and labour? £4085...(the swingarm alone
is £853 excluding VAT)
The two scooters which crashed five minutes after me on the same bit
of road both looked fine after their scrape down the road. And if the
council don't accept liability, the increased insurance will mean
it'll be time to trade Ducati for Piaggio. The tyres would be cheaper
too
So, just don't crash, whatever you do.

Hey, I saw a 749 that had been slid down the road in a low speed spill last
time I was in Italia Moto in Lincoln. All stickered up in Fila colours,
gorgeous .... on one side. The offside looked a bit "off" though They
said it cost over £4k to repair it. Wasn't yours was it?

Hi Hentry
Nah, isn't mine. I spilled in London, so ended up at a local Ducati
dealer there.
Knowing another similarly damaged bike also cost over £4k to fix
should make be feel slightly better, but I'm just numb from chasing
insurers and council at the moment :'(
I should get it back just as the snow start falling this year...
I'll be ebaying someo of the less damaged bits I think - the swingarm
has a real small scratch on it etc - hoping that I get enough to
finance a termi - every cloud has a silver lining as they say...
