So I'm sittin here lookin out at the tree right out at the corner
of the property, right at the street, *right* next to th' The
Neighbors From Hell (tm).

And thinkin of its history.

One hundred rings. 70' tall (and missing it's top, no doubt due in no
part whatsoever to itself). 4' diameter at the base of the trunk.
Planted when this place was a gold mine (literally). Planted just
about precisely exactly when Birdie Fererri Garberini (who lived here
on this property for *70* years) wuz born. Planted right around the
turn of the *other* century.

And thinking of all that history.

But actually, this post is not about *that* cedar. It's about the one
next to it. About 7' away, on the *other* side of the front walk.
(What *WERE* they thinking, planting two magnificant trees like this
7' apart?)

So the one next to it, the twin sister, came down today. Shed a tear,
I did. 100 years and it's gone. Forever.

What's this got to do with mc's? Well, th' dood who brought it down
rides a Harley. And btw, he and his
cute-as-a-button-and-younger-than-my beard wife will be at SNIFF. As
will the crane operator. What a coupla pros, them 2 guys. Damn, it's
great to see work like this (where you really don't get even one
single fuck up; think about that the next time you do a little fuck up
in *your* job <g>).

So, here's to the one that stands, to the one that fell, to those that
felled it, and to SNIFF that has one more legacy to celebrate.

Ummm, don't think there *are* any little fuckups at in my job. If there are
they tend to be as noisy as the bigguns.

Hey. The biggest fuckup *you* can do only kills a bunch of *other*

I've always wondered why some of us look at trees differently than just
a hunk of wood for burning or a nuisance to be cleared to make way for
progress. While I've never been a tree-hugger, I have felt more than a
little wistful about terminating the life of a strong tree of long life,
or seeing it, or hearing of it. Yet, if the material gets used for
somethign useful or nice to look at (hopefully both), then it's somehow
ok - the tree lives on in a way.

Do you know what the fate of the tree will be?

They got (3) 15' lengths of trunk, nice stuff. I'm going to get a
slab or 2 of it. Haven't yet decided what I'll do with it, but it's
going to become part of this property again.

And, at this point (this'll answer questions for folks showing up next
week), I left a tall stump. Gonna talk to some folks about doing a
carving out of it. Or maybe we'll just take it out down to the
ground.

Cool Story!
Just made me think of the trip I took to the Boston Museum of Science
They have a section of a giant redwood in there that has been around
since like 400 B.C. (Yeah, no shit!) You push buttons, and little lights
light up that correspond to different major points in history (Birth of
Christ, many wars, stuff like that.) Freakin amazing......

To Everything that makes us ponder.. <clink>!

Yup. Back 130 years ago or so, when all that huge old growth was
being exploited and little retained, they cut down and moved to NY (?)
a huge section of the lower trunk of a Sequoia (biggest living
things). 'Cause until they reconstructed it back there, no one could
believe a tree could really be that big. (They turned the stump into
a sizable dance floor out in the woods.)

We've got a sugar maple in our front yard...probably 15 years old now.
This spring it gave birth to an itty bitty sugar maple. Found it
struggling to survive about 10 feet from the outer edge of the parent
tree. Unlike an old tree that has survived years of draught, lightning
strikes, wind, disease and bugs, this little tree was barely making it
on its own just weeks after poking itself outta the seed. We watered it
and kept it free of insects until it appeared healthy enough to transplant
to a more appropriate spot in the yard. We carefully moved it to the
other side of the yard and continued to pamper it, imagining the beautiful
tree that we'll evenutally have. Last weekend it was nearly a foot tall
and growing strong. Had my oldest son, Alex (MAMBM, BS#Pending) come out
to help around the house. Put him on the tractor to mow the lawn.

He then mowed our little tree off about 2 inches above the ground.

Andy aka Big "you mowed over WHAT?!?!" Stinkie<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
