Well, they were Travel Writers, not motorcycle enthusiats, but
nonethless...

http://www.fcvb.org/press_15.html

Let's see how they did...

1. Blue Ridge Parkway: Virginia and North Carolina

[Since I've never found it to be other than very foggy and or drizzly,
I guess I'm not the one to judge. I remain convinced it's just a
fuckin NASA wind tunnel aka Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with an impressive
fog generator and without the cute props.]

2. Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway: South Dakota

[Absolutely. And included in recent trip.]

3. Port Townsend to Neah Bay: Washington's Olympic Peninsula

[Well maybe. That Peninsula must have been pretty spectacular before
all the clear cutting of the last century. Didn't go beyond Port
Townsend on this trip.]

4. Mt. Cheaha: Alabama "A very straight road with a 30-degree angle
drop from the mountain - for 3 miles!"

[Haven't been there. Will probly make it a point. But doesn't sound
like it belongs on this top 10 list. (There's a *lot* of great roads
out there.)]

5. Going-to-the-Sun Road: Glacier National Park, Montana

[Absolutely. And included in the recent trip as well, tho regretably
the entire area was engulfed in so much smoke that this time we
couldn't even see the gorgeous mtn range we were traversing.]

6. Great River Road: Baton Rouge - New Orleans, Louisiana

[Yup. Wasn't on this trip's route but love doin it when I'm in the
region.]

7. Great River Road: Iowa, Wisconsin & Minnesota along the Mississippi
River

[Absolutely. Did a bunch of it this time; had tentative plans to do
summore just for the halibut butt we had places to go and people to
see; just can't get too much of if, tho.]

8. Kancagamus Highway: New Hampshire

[Dunno if I've done this road. Sounds like one I'll have to seek
out.]

9. Overseas Highway: Florida Keys

[Yeah, sure. Unique. Wuz gonna do it last Feb before gettin stuck in
the Tejas ice storm. Did it last year. Not for the "do it every
chance I get" list.]

10. Acadia National Park (27-mile Park Loop Road): Maine

[Yup. Been there, too, but not this year. Pretty damn nice. Again,
there's alot of pretty damn nice roads out there.]

So, I've done 8-9 of 'em. They left out Charles Carolt's (can't
remember the spelling) alltime favorite: The Beartooth Highway. I
can't disagree with him.

And what about US 101 up in northern CA, CA Hiway 1 (central coast),
Utah Hiway 12, NM Hiway 64, The Cherohala Hiway, hell, even I-70 along
the Colorado Ri. So many great roads.

there's better scenic roads in the southeast than the the BRP, I can;t
see it being number one, but it should be in the top ten, you really
need to do it when it's not foggy <g>

Road to Hana in Maui and Pacific Coast Hwy in Calafornia belong in any top
10 list of great Motorcyle Rides in My opinion.

I've done these three, and enjoyed them all. Of the three, the
Going-to-the-Sun Road was best. Equally beautiful is Trail Ridge
Road over Rocky Mountain National Park.

My list of great roads has to include Hwy. 550 from Ouray to Durango
in Colorado, Hwy. 94 from St. Louis to Jefferson City in Missouri,
and the Beartooth Highway (U.S. 212) between Wyoming and Montana.

Another great stretch is CO 67 from Sedalia to Deckers, but it's
not for the faint of heart - there's one stretch that isn't paved,
and it goes straight down the mountainside. And then there are all
the roads in the area bounded by Santa Fe, Questa, Raton and Las
Vegas (NM).

One road that I'll always remember with fondness is US 160 in Missouri
east of US 65. Take a right on 125, wander over hill and dale, take
the ferry across Bull Shoals Lake, and end up down by Yellville in
Arkansas. Fun!

Okay, now I want to go for a ride...

Glad you added Beartooth Highway and Ouray to Durango.
Wouldn't be a valid 10 list without them IMO.
Beartooth is actually #2 on my favorite rides list (Going-to-the-Sun
Road #1), but I admit them cold brews and the garlic burger in Cooke
City might have made my opinion biased.

I've done 6 of them, excluding 1,3,4,& 6. Some serious ommisons in my book
include:

Idaho 12 (Lolo Scenic Byway)
MT\ID 93 (Lost Trail Pass)
Idaho 75 (Chalis to Sun Valley)
Wyoming 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway)
Wyoming 14 & 14A (Medicine Ring S.B.)
Wyoming 16 (Tensleep S.B.)
Nevada 93 (Wells to I-15)
California 4
California 88/89
CA\OR 199
Washington 706 (Ranier Park)
Washington 20 (Sedro Wolley to Okanogan)
Utah 128 (Colorado River Valley S.B.)
Missouri 94 (Jefferson City to St. Louis)
Arizona 66 (Oatman to Seligman)

Oh man, this could go on all night...

Dirty Harry and I (with spouses) found some very excellent miles right
here in WA state I didn't know existed. No tree stumps involved. I'm
going to revisit them and a few more and post a pictographic tour of the
route. It's really nice and fortunately not on anyone's top 10 list.

Except mine.

And that's the greatest beauty. There's *NO* top 10 and there's so
many great roads to discover, even after you've discovered more than
you deserve to in one lifetime.

Another definition of infinity: For all instances of great roads
already discovered, there is another great road yet to be found.

I'm going to add the Green River, Flaming Gorge area, end to end from
Vernal, UT to the town of Green River in the very unpoplar state of
Wyoming as a ride I'd choose to do again in a heartbeat. High, wide,
deep, red, blue, green, cold, warm... there's only this one and it has
it all. There's some places you just want to turn around and see again.

And it just occurs to me that we have the makings of an excellent
travelogue if we can get our editor in chief Skiv to jump in.

Do you remember the "49 mile scenic drive" which signs were posted all
over San Francisco back in the 1950's and 60's? Another one of the
things I took for granted and never did cuz I was born and raised
there, including walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. Just like the
"signals set for 30 mph" on 19th Avenue in the Sunset. Yeah, they'll
stay green up to 35 or 40 mph late at night, but there ain't no way
you'll hit every one of 'em in the daytime no matter how fast you go..

Well, not exactly an example of a great riding road, butt....

So what happened? Are the signs now gone? (Replaced by those signs
for bicycle highway (route) numbers now? <g>)

Not very good, in my book!
Not one mention of Northern Ca.?
CA-70, aka the Feather River loop? Hiway 49? ANYWHERE along the
central and northern coast. Hell, I'll even through So-Cal a bone and
include parts of the south coast. A little place called Big Sur? The
northern Redwoods?
Looping around TAHOE!?
This guy needs a slap!

Note:
I'm leaving in 15 minutes for a solo North Coast run...San Rafael to
north of Eureka. Maybe I'll drop the guy a note and tell him what he
missed!

See ya!
