Hey Y'All, belly up and have a few on Gator while I vent about my new
Sporty.
As y'all know, I recently got an 07 50th Anniversary Sporty, XL 50. I love
the bike and it rides great, but I was worried about the fuel injection and
not having a reserve, just an idiot light to tell you you're low on gas. I
ran a few tanks through it and it was pretty consistent coming on about 95
to 100 miles. This left about 1.2 gallons in the tank or averaging about 45
mpg. No problem so far.
Fast forward to the weekend and a road trip. I fill up but the light comes
on in about 5 miles. It was intermittent then came on steady. Now I know I
just got gas and don't think this is a problem worth scraping the ride for.
All I got to do is figure about 100 miles looking for a gas station, right?
Nope, 95 miles and 2 miles from the gas station it quits. Figured out to be
29.6 mpg on premium from a good gas station. The next 2 tanks were back to
45 and 47 mpg. So add sorry gas mileage to a faulty gas light to Harley
taking away the reserve valve and I end up stranded. Well, not completely
stranded but definitely not a happy camper.
I will say the dealer and mechanic were stand up ad said they'd take care of
it. But my point is it's a brand new bike and it's already a problem. I
know, mechanical things break down. But if they still had reserves, it
wouldn't have been a problem.
Don't know if I made the point I was trying to or not, but I'm not a fan of
idiot lights and no reserve. I'm through now, but go ahead and grab another
one on me before I head out. >> Stay informed about: 07 Sporty EFI With No Reserve |

There is a low fuel sending unit in the tank I do not know if it is
adjustable the shop manual does not say. As far as the shitty mileage it
gets better as the bike gets broke in and I now average 45 mpg. My low fuel
light comes on at around 110 miles and figure I have about another 40-50
miles before fill up. It takes a little getting use to with no reserve to
switch over and I really do not think the tank drains as low as my 03 does.
Also, there is a filter in the tank which requires to be periodically
changed.

When the low fuel light comes on is one of the variables that can be
adjusted in a re map of computer.
You didnt have any problem getting use to NOT messing with a petcock on your
fuelie I assume. or the enricher.?
To me, the fuel injection was the best chouce I made with the new bike.
Thanks for Drink. Btw my 5 gallon tank has 1.5 gal left when my light goes
on.

My stock '02 FXDX does that. I figure when it happens I m saving my
odometer a few miles and keeping the mileage low.
