There's a visible, black, rubber tube on right side of bike. Large
diameter tube, like 1 or 2 inches. Around the connection point, where
tube meets metal, there's dried up flaked coolant. Almost as if the
tube isn't on tight enough. But I checked and the darned thing is as
tight as can be.

Any idea what can cause this?

thanks.

Replace the coolant hose. It might be dried out with cracks in it which
allows coolant through, particularly when it's under pressure before the
thermostat opens. You didn't specify if it's the connection to the rad or
to the engine, but when you replace the hose carefully check the metal
fitting the hose fits onto, looking for cracks.

Well if it's leaking, a bad fitting. It happens. Don't keep trying to
tighten it beyond reason as you'll break something.

If you have no experience with pipe fittings (and there are a very wide
variety) take it to the shop.

You might try loosening the fitting and wrapping it with teflon tape. as
a sort of packing then retighten. Teflon has the quality of when under
compression and heat it wants to expand.
