Shirley a round on me.
I hope Roach is doing better. He has done a great job around here,
fixing the place up and all

Any way I have a problem with my 01 flh Ultra gas gauge needle bobbing
around (does not happen when full). So what do you all think may be the
problem. I think it is the sending unit, but could be wrong.
Just want to see if others had same problem and the fix, Just in case
I'm wrong.

Thanks
Willie

In my experience the Harley fuel gauge has always been pretty much useless
as far as accuracy goes. I try to remember to set the trip meter to zero and
use that as my "gauge".
The location of the gauge is a ideal place for a VDO ammeter.

Took me a while to figure mine out (2006 FLHTCI). Seems when I fill it,
I go about 65-75 miles before the gauge moves, then it goes down real
fast.

What I've figured out is the gauge doesn't move for the first 1.5-2
gallons used, then it meters the remaining 3.5 or 3 gallons left. So
when it says 1/2 a tank, it's actually half the tank that it gauges, or
1.5 to 1.75 gallons. Useful I guess, but I watch the odometer.

mine also fogs up when it rain or when it gets a bath. Been like that from
new which HD and others said that's the way it is

so have I but it still drives me crazy when I see it bobbing around

But it some watt works. Mine bounce's all over the gauge after about 1.5 gal.
I was thinking of painting the face of the gauge black so I don't see it
bobbing.
Thank's George

Mine has been very accurate tell it gave up it's ghost. I been looking on ebay
for a gauge or sending unit. I was hoping there is a way to test them.

Hmmm...I would then tend to believe the gauge is defective,
since it's normal the sending unit wavers back and forth under those
conditions, but a capacitor in the gauge circuitry should stop it from
bouncing quickly.

That's "Service Manual", not the useless owner's manual.
Also, if your bike is an '01 or newer (can't recall from the original
post), it may also be in the electrical diagnostics manual.

Thanks again Phil. It's a 01, I do have the service manual. But first I need to get off
my ass and go fine it, if I can fine where I left it at. . I don't have the electrical
diagnostics manual which I should get... I know I know don't tell me I should have it
